Student answer (Band 7.5)
In many countries, boys and girls study together in co-educational schools, while some people believe that students can benefit more from studying in single-sex schools. Although separate education may have some advantages, I largely disagree with this view because mixed schools better prepare students for real-life situations.
On the one hand, single-sex schools can provide a more focused learning environment. Some students may feel less distracted when they are educated with people of the same gender. As a result, they may concentrate more effectively on their studies and participate actively in classroom activities. In addition, teachers may be able to design lessons according to the particular learning needs of their students. For example, some schools may organise different activities to encourage students to develop confidence in subjects where they traditionally have less interest.
On the other hand, co-educational schools offer several important benefits. Firstly, students learn how to communicate and cooperate with people of different genders from an early age. This is valuable because workplaces and wider society are generally mixed environments. Secondly, studying together can help reduce stereotypes and promote mutual respect. Boys and girls can understand each other's perspectives through group projects, discussions and extracurricular activities. For instance, when students of different genders work together on a school project, they can learn to divide responsibilities and solve problems as a team.
In my opinion, although single-sex schools can create a focused academic environment, the social advantages of co-education are more significant. Schools should teach students how to interact respectfully with different people rather than separating them throughout their education.
In conclusion, I disagree that boys and girls generally benefit more from separate education. Co-educational schools can provide both academic opportunities and essential social skills needed in adult life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments for both sides are relevant and well-developed. For example, your point about 'real-life situations' and 'workplaces' provides a strong, logical justification for your stance. The ideas are extended with clear explanations and examples, such as the mention of group projects and extracurricular activities. The conclusion effectively summarises your main points and reinforces your position. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question asked.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the two sides of the argument is smooth, using effective signposting phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Firstly', and 'Consequently' are used appropriately to link ideas within and between sentences. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of your argument, making the text easy to follow. The flow of information is natural and consistent throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases like 'focused learning environment', 'mutual respect', and 'essential social skills' show a good command of topic-specific language. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys your meaning clearly, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to reach the highest band. The word choice is consistently natural, and there are no errors in spelling or collocation that impede communication. Your vocabulary is sufficient to express your ideas with precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'Although' clauses and relative clauses (e.g., '...subjects where they traditionally have less interest'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that hinder the reader's understanding. You use a mix of simple and complex forms effectively to convey your arguments. To improve further, you could experiment with more varied sentence beginnings or more advanced grammatical structures like inversion or conditional sentences.
