In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Although some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools, I completely disagree with this view because co-educational schools promote gender equality and understanding among learners.

The primary reason why I disagree with this statement is that mixed schools give learners equal access to education, which has a significant impact on their future. This is largely because both boys and girls learn in the same classroom and are taught by the same teachers. A pertinent example of this can be observed in modern developed nations, where structural investments in this specific domain have consistently translated into superior long-term outcomes. Consequently, it stands to reason that prioritizing this dimension serves as a vital catalyst for broader systemic advancement.

Another significant reason is that it promotes understanding among learners. While it is true that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools, I would argue that mixed schools allow both sexes to interact through group discussions. This is particularly important because they exchange ideas among themselves, meaning that they will build mutual respect. To conclude, although educating learners in a single-sex school has merits, I firmly believe that educating them in a co-educational school is a better approach because it promotes equality and understanding among learners, which are significant factors in their future lives and work environments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding gender equality and social interaction are relevant. However, the development is somewhat hindered by the repetition of a 'template' paragraph. The second body paragraph repeats the exact same text used in the first body paragraph, which significantly undermines the depth of the argument. While the position is clear, the lack of unique, substantive support for the second point prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure that each paragraph provides distinct, original evidence or reasoning rather than recycling generic phrases.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'while it is true that', and 'in addition' are used to link ideas. However, the repetition of the exact same paragraph in the second body section creates a major issue with cohesion and logical flow. It makes the essay feel mechanical and repetitive rather than a cohesive argument. While the individual sentences are linked well, the overall structure is compromised by this redundancy, which disrupts the progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'structural investments', 'systemic advancement', and 'vital catalyst' demonstrate an attempt to use more sophisticated, less common lexical items. However, the repetition of the same complex vocabulary in the second paragraph highlights a lack of variety. While the range is adequate for the task, the reliance on a repeated template limits the demonstration of a wider, more flexible vocabulary. To reach a higher band, focus on using a broader range of synonyms and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The use of complex structures, such as 'Although some people think that... I completely disagree', is handled well. However, because the second body paragraph is a verbatim copy of the first, the range of grammatical structures is effectively halved. The grammar itself is correct, but the lack of variety in sentence construction due to the repetition prevents a higher score in this category.
