In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
I believe that Education is a key element that should be provided to each and every individual whether its education provided in mixed schools or separately in single sex school. In both cases the main aspect of going to school is to get information and skills required for one to function normally in society and succeed in different endeavors of life,
I believe both of these cases can have their advantages and disadvantages. First if we talk about mixed schools the advantages of studying among boys and girls is that you can build up confidence and learn things through different perspectives, how it is normally in society because when you're part of society it has both genders and you can't avoid one gender as its deem unprofessional therefore the major pro of studying in a mixed school is that you're exposed to the ways of society at a young age.
However on the other hand the disadvantages of studying in a mixed school is that depending on ones personality, some might feel shy among peers and it might induce anxiety, it can also create peer pressure among students as education involves different assignments, tasks, presentations that one has to collaborate on therefore it might create a uncomfortable environment for those individuals.
If we take a look at single-sex school, it also involves its advantages and disadvantages. First and foremost the main advantage of single-sex schools is that individuals can learn from one another, they can lean on for advice as the experiences and struggles are similar within one gender. There is no animosity amongst one another and generally no feeling of uncomfortableness.
On the contrary, the disadvantages could be that the individuals are not used to the societal ways, and may fall behind those that have studied in mixed schools as they are more competent in talking to the opposite gender and working among them.
In conclusion I stand firm on my original sentiment that education is the key element that should be focused on as its a privilege to get an education whereas many individuals stay out of school due to multiple reasons such socio-economic and political reasons, therefore if given the chance one should opt for education irrespective of the mode of education provided so that societies can progress together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument. However, the position is not clearly defined. While you mention that you 'stand firm on my original sentiment,' the introduction is vague and does not explicitly state whether you agree or disagree with the view that single-sex schools are beneficial. The ideas are relevant but remain somewhat superficial; for example, the point about 'societal ways' is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples or evidence. To reach a higher band, ensure your position is clearly stated in the introduction and maintained consistently, and provide more depth to your supporting arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the topic. You use some cohesive devices like 'However,' 'On the contrary,' and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'in both cases the main aspect,' which lacks a strong antecedent. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'endeavors,' 'animosity,' and 'socio-economic.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'deem unprofessional' (should be 'deemed unprofessional') and 'uncomfortable environment' (which is correct, but you used 'a uncomfortable'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation and article usage, such as 'its education' (should be 'it is education'), 'a uncomfortable' (should be 'an uncomfortable'), and missing commas in compound sentences. Additionally, some sentences are run-on, such as the first sentence of the second paragraph. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve your accuracy.
