Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many countries, boys and girls study together in co-educational schools. However, some people believe that students can benefit more from studying in single-sex schools. I partly agree with this view because separate schools can help students focus on their studies, but I believe that mixed schools provide important social benefits.

One advantage of single-sex schools is that students may be able to concentrate better on their education. They may feel less pressure to impress students of the opposite sex, which can allow them to focus more on their studies. In addition, teachers can sometimes use different teaching methods according to the needs of boys or girls. For example, if teachers understand that students have different learning styles, they can prepare lessons that are more suitable for them.

However, I believe that co-educational schools have an important advantage because they prepare students for real life. In the workplace and in society, men and women need to communicate and work together. Studying together from a young age can help students become more comfortable communicating with people of both genders. It can also teach them how to respect different opinions and work as a team.

Another benefit of mixed schools is that they give students the opportunity to develop a wider range of friendships. This can improve their communication skills and help them become more confident in social situations. For instance, students who regularly work on group projects with both boys and girls may learn how to cooperate with different types of people.

In conclusion, although single-sex schools may help some students concentrate on their studies, I believe that co-educational schools are more beneficial overall. They provide students with valuable social and communication skills that can be useful in their future education, careers and personal lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a balanced position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The arguments for both single-sex and co-educational schools are relevant and logically extended. For instance, the discussion on 'social benefits' and 'real-life preparation' provides a clear rationale for the writer's preference. The ideas are well-developed, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points. The response is fully focused on the task, and the position is clear and consistent, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits of single-sex schools and the advantages of co-educational schools is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Another benefit' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The writer uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'co-educational', 'single-sex schools', 'learning styles', and 'social situations'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys meaning clearly, it is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. There is a good level of precision, and the word choices are consistently natural. To reach a higher band, the student could incorporate more nuanced or academic collocations to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of conditional structures ('if teachers understand...') and relative clauses ('students who regularly work...'). The sentences are generally error-free, and the punctuation is accurate. The control over grammar is consistent, and the writing is easy to read. While the structures are correct, they are relatively standard; incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence patterns could further enhance the grammatical range.
