Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued by some people that education should be in school separately single sex is a benefit. Although some people might agree with the statement, I completely disagree. Not only because co-learning offers mutual respect and a challenging environment, but also for interpersonal skills.

There are multiple benefits associated with the co-educational method. Firstly, mutual respect is a major benefit of this development. As learning together breaks old biases thinking and gives an opportunity to understand opposite genders and capabilities. Take an example of Japan, most of their population respect opposite genders in today's world, mainly because in 1976, their government made an initiative in terms of co-education. Thus, it is proven that learning together is beneficial.

Secondly, co-classes give an environment of challenges, which is leading to the benefit of this method. As mixed classrooms give an opportunity to challenge each other in an academic way. For instance, in New Zealand, it is expected that by the year 2038, most of their yungstarts will be able to manage any types of difficulty in their lives, mainly because now they have developed new laws in terms of co-education. Hence, co-learning is beneficial regarding easily managing challenges in further life.

Finally, students can easily develop their interpersonal skills in co-classes. As daily interaction with the opposite gender helps in reducing shyness and building confidence.

To sum up, I believe that the co-educational method is more beneficial than separate in single-sex schooling, not only because of respect for the opposite sex and challenging competition in class, but also for building communicational skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position against single-sex education. The ideas are relevant, focusing on mutual respect, academic challenge, and interpersonal skills. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the reference to Japan and New Zealand is vague and lacks a clear logical connection to the specific benefits of co-education, appearing more like a general assertion than a well-supported example. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting arguments would benefit from more detailed explanation and concrete evidence to reach a higher band. The response covers all parts of the task, but the depth of analysis is inconsistent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear topic sentence. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Finally', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs can be slightly disjointed. For instance, the transition in the second paragraph between the general statement and the example is abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression of ideas could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the essay maintains a coherent structure throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'mutual respect' and 'interpersonal skills'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'old biases thinking' and 'yungstarts' (a spelling error for 'youngsters'). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. The errors in word choice do not impede communication, but they do highlight a limitation in the student's lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'education should be in school separately single sex is a benefit' and 'most of their population respect opposite genders'. These errors, along with issues in sentence construction and punctuation, occur frequently. While the meaning remains clear, the control over complex structures is inconsistent. The student attempts to use complex sentences, but these often contain errors that detract from the overall accuracy. A greater focus on sentence variety and proofreading for basic grammatical errors would improve the score.
