IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There has been a long debate over years among parents who specifically had daughters that for girls it is not quite suitable to take admission in schools those involve co-educational systems.
In old times, it was much of a big deal for children to study together with opposite genders. So many incidents such as rapes and women trafficking were under discussion which made parents to think twice before sending their children into mixed education.
Whereas, I strongly believe that in a co-educational system, children get to learn much more about habits of each other. For students and children who are afraid to communicate with opposite genders it is the best opportunity to develop confidence.
As per the real life incident I faced in past years was that I used to study in a single sex environment where there were only girls but soon when I persued my secondary level education, I studied in a co-educational system which changed me in so many ways.
My confidence level was touching to sky and my communication skills got way better. I had an opportunity to deal with boys and observe their habits which proved to be so helpful in my life ahead.
So as for my example, I understand that girls and boys should study in a mixed environment where they can interact with each other under limits. Teachers and Principals play an important role in this. They should monetorize classrooms and pay extra attention to the safety of their students. Whenever teachers feel something weird, They should immediately take an action against it and inform it to the head of their departments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the topic of co-educational versus single-sex schooling and presents a clear personal position in favour of mixed schools. However, the development of ideas in the body paragraphs is somewhat restricted. The second paragraph introduces serious issues like crimes and safety concerns in a generalised and rather extreme way without fully linking them back to academic benefits or educational philosophy. The counter-argument and personal example are provided, but the reasoning tends to rely heavily on anecdotal experience rather than broader supporting arguments. While the task is addressed and a position is maintained throughout, the depth of extension places the response at a Band 6 level where ideas are relevant but somewhat under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, though the paragraphing structure is slightly fragmented, with several very short paragraphs that could be better grouped. Logical progression is attempted, using transitional phrases such as 'Whereas' and 'So as for my example'. However, referencing and cohesive ties are at times mechanical or awkward, such as starting sentences with 'As per the real life incident I faced in past years was that...' which disrupts the natural flow of ideas. Paragraphing is used, but transitions between the societal arguments and the personal anecdote lack smooth cohesion. Overall, the arrangement provides a coherent overall layout that fits the Band 6 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic personal experiences and opinions. However, there are noticeable limitations in lexical range and collocation. Phrases like 'take admission in schools', 'big deal', and 'monetorize classrooms' (likely intending to mean monitor) demonstrate restricted word choice and spelling inaccuracies. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary ('co-educational system', 'communication skills', 'confidence level'), errors in collocation and phrasing prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The lexical control is generally sufficient to convey meaning, aligning well with the Band 5.5 or 6 descriptor, though leaning towards Band 5.5 due to word choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability to construct longer sentences ('Whereas, I strongly believe that in a co-educational system, children get to learn much more about habits of each other.'). However, grammatical errors occur frequently throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('take admission in schools those involve'), awkward preposition usage ('over years among parents who specifically had daughters'), and structural awkwardness ('My confidence level was touching to sky'). Furthermore, spelling and punctuation slips are present, such as 'monetorize'. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, placing the grammatical performance firmly within the Band 5 category.
