Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response addresses the prompt regarding whether boys and girls benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools, taking a somewhat muddled stance that leans towards the protective benefits of single-sex education. The ideas are presented, such as the concern that students in co-educational schools might become distracted by relationships, but these ideas remain underdeveloped and are often repetitive. For example, the student repeatedly mentions that students do not focus on their studies due to relationships without providing deeper analysis or extended examples. While all parts of the task are touched upon, the lack of fully elaborated arguments and a clear, sustained position places the response within the Band 4 to Band 5 range. Due to the limited development of ideas and tendency to over-generalise, a Band 4.5 score is appropriate here.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

Coherence and cohesion are significant weaknesses in this essay. While the student attempts to use transition words such as 'firslty', 'secondly', and 'In conclusion', their application is mechanical, frequently misspelled, and poorly punctuated. Paragraphing is extremely problematic; the entire body of the text lacks a logical division into proper paragraphs, with sentences running together haphazardly. Furthermore, referencing and logical progression are weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of arguments. For instance, the transition from discussing open-minded generations to relationships and early marriage lacks cohesive ties. These issues align well with the Band 4 descriptor, where information and ideas are not arranged coherently, and basic cohesive devices are faulty or absent.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used throughout the essay is basic, repetitive, and often inaccurate. The student relies on simple terms and makes frequent spelling errors, such as 'separatly', 'sec', 'firslty', 'beacause', 'Genaration', 'stretegies', 'compalins', 'stuides', 'addmission', 'prepher', and 'perants'. Furthermore, there are numerous collocation and word choice errors, such as 'gain education properly', 'make their life in risk', and 'dangarous situation'. While the vocabulary is just about adequate to convey a rudimentary message, the high frequency of spelling and word-form errors severely strains the reader and restricts the lexical score to a Band 4.0, as the range is extremely limited and errors impede comprehension.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

Grammatical range and accuracy are very limited in this response. The student struggles to construct grammatically sound sentences, relying mostly on simple structures that are frequently marred by basic errors. Complex sentences are rarely attempted, and when they are, they contain severe structural flaws and punctuation errors, such as missing capitalization and run-on sentences like 'so they didn't focus their stuides and education moreover they completly distract from the studies.' Subject-verb agreement errors, tense inconsistencies, and missing articles are pervasive throughout the text (e.g., 'In this schools', 'they knows', 'happend in our culture'). Because errors are frequent, distort meaning in places, and severely limit the range of structures, this performance corresponds to a Band 4.0.
