Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are a lot of places in the world where males and females are educated togehter in schools. A number of individuals believe that both genders should be educated seperately in single-sex schools because it is more beneficial for them. I personally disagree with the position that boys and girls should not be educated togehter. In this essay I will explain why both genders benefit from mixed schools and why single-sex schools can be problematic.

Firstly, co-educational schools for males and females help to understand more about acceptance and gender equality which is very vital because nowadays, in many regions in the world there is a huge inequality in genders and teaching boys and girls seperately in schools take part in the exclusion of women all over the world. The risk of boys learning that they are better than girls is an issue because that leads to violence or assaulting against girls. In addition, if there is a single-sex school, many pupils feel isolated or uncomfortable because only being with their own gender can result in other problems. To give an example, boys are tending to be more violent than girls and there is a risk of an enhanced violence tendency. In addition, coming-outs can be more difficult in singe-sex schools than mixed schools.

Secondly, dealing with the other gender is essential, particularly during puberty because knowing about prevention methods, gender identity, sexual orientation or being educated about normal habits, such as attraction or physical health. If single-sex schools do not educate each gender of that or do not let them in contact with the other gender, there is a possibility that these pupils have more diffifulties in their later lives.

To conclude, people's opinions are divided in whether girls and boys should be educated together or not. In my opinion, both genders should not be seperated because this would lead to more inclusion, education about bodies and prevention and it would benefit society as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and developed position against single-sex schooling and in favor of co-educational institutions. The essay presents relevant ideas, such as the promotion of gender equality, mutual understanding, and the negative social implications of isolating genders during developmental years. For instance, the writer argues that mixed schools help pupils understand acceptance and reduce violence. However, some arguments, such as the mention of 'coming-outs', are slightly under-developed and lack clear contextual connection. Overall, the task response is well-rounded, maintaining a consistent position from the introduction to the conclusion, satisfying the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is divided into a logical structure with a clear introduction, two main body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'To conclude'. However, referencing and paragraph internal cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical. For example, the transition between ideas within the second body paragraph feels somewhat rushed and overstuffed with multiple distinct points ranging from violence to sexual orientation. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but overall progression could be smoother. The student demonstrates clear logical organization throughout, fitting the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'co-educational', 'gender identity', and 'prevention methods'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, including 'togehter' (repeatedly), 'seperately', and 'diffifulties'. Word choice is also occasionally imprecise, such as 'enhanced violence tendency' rather than 'increased propensity for violence'. Despite these lexical slips, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary remains minimally sufficient for the demands of the task, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'if there is a single-sex school, many pupils feel isolated...' and 'knowing about prevention methods...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'education about bodies and prevention' and 'if single-sex schools do not educate each gender of that'. Punctuation and sentence structures require better control, and errors sometimes cause slight strain for the reader, aligning closely with the Band 6 descriptors.
