Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many countries, boys and girls study together in co-educational schools, while some people believe that students would benefit more from being educated separately. Although single-sex education can provide certain advantages, I believe that mixed schools are generally more beneficial for students because they promote social development and prepare young people for the real world.

On the one hand, there are several arguments in favour of single-sex schools. Firstly, students may experience fewer distractions when they are surrounded only by classmates of the same gender. As a result, they may be able to concentrate more effectively on their studies and achieve better academic results. Secondly, teachers can sometimes adapt their teaching methods to the particular learning needs of boys or girls. For example, some schools may organise activities specifically designed to encourage girls to participate more actively in science and technology subjects, or boys to develop stronger communication skills.

On the other hand, I believe that co-educational schools offer greater long-term benefits. The modern workplace and society consist of people of different genders, so students need to learn how to communicate and cooperate with one another from an early age. Studying together can help young people develop confidence, mutual respect and teamwork skills. For instance, when students work together on group projects, they learn to listen to different opinions, divide responsibilities and solve problems collectively. These abilities are highly valuable in both higher education and professional life.

In conclusion, although single-sex schools may help some students focus on their academic work, I do not believe that they are generally superior to co-educational institutions. In my view, studying alongside students of both genders provides a more realistic educational environment and develops import

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student presents a very clear and well-developed response to the prompt. The introduction clearly states the writer's position, which is maintained throughout the essay. Both sides of the argument are addressed: the advantages of single-sex schools (fewer distractions, tailored teaching) are discussed in the second paragraph, while the counter-argument regarding social development and real-world preparation is elaborated in the third paragraph. Ideas are well-supported with relevant examples, such as group projects and participation in science subjects. The response addresses all parts of the task thoroughly and fulfills the prompt requirements effectively, deserving a high band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are logically sequenced with appropriate transitional markers such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Cohesive devices are used effectively without being mechanical, and referencing is clear (e.g., linking 'These abilities' back to teamwork and communication skills). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. Although the conclusion cuts off slightly before the final period, the overall structure remains coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is varied and appropriate for an academic essay. The student successfully employs less common items and academic collocations, such as 'social development', 'co-educational institutions', 'mutual respect', and 'professional life'. Word choice is generally precise, and collocation is natural throughout the response. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient to allow flexibility and precision, supporting the flow of ideas effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student displays a strong command of grammatical structures, successfully utilising a mix of complex and simple sentences. Examples of complex structures include conditional and subordinate clauses, such as 'Although single-sex education can provide certain advantages, I believe that...' and 'when students work together on group projects, they learn to listen...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and control of grammar and punctuation is good. While the essay ends abruptly in the final sentence due to a missing conclusion, the grammatical accuracy within the produced text is consistently high.
