Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is widely acknowledged that co-education has become an increasingly contentious issue in contemporary societies. While some opponent assert that it is advantageous for both genders to study in single-sex schools to better focus on studies, I firmly contend that studying in mixed-school is beneficial for girls and boys in terms to enhance understanding and improve communication skills. This essay will critically examine the issue before giving a balanced conclusion.

To commence with, one compelling justification is that it allows both genders to become tolerant to opposite sex. Continuous contact in the classroom reduces misunderstanding and disputes among them and therefore, develop a sense of understading and connectivity. As a result, this makes them emotionally and mentally strong and enables them to perform better in their professional life when women work in a real environment with men. For instance, it is evident that many females make assumption about male genders which increases conflicts and leads to loss in businesses.

Another vital consideration is that it improves their communication skills by engaging in conversation with each others. Some girls feel shy while communicating with boys and therefore, do not able to deliver their message effectively. Therefore, a real environment, at early life, helps both of them to develop their speaking skils and to learn how to behave respectfully and confidently with opposite genders. A pertinent example is that at workplaces, in this modern era, an effective communication excretes barriers and involvement of both genders in business activity leads to progress.

In conclusion, although differing viewpoints persist, a large number of evidence supports the idea that mixed schools are beneficial for promoting unity and improving communication skills among girls and boys. Therefore, this approach is both pragmatic and beneficial for long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing with co-education. The main ideas regarding social tolerance and communication skills are relevant and extended, supported by explanations about professional environments and workplaces. However, some of the supporting points, such as females making assumptions about males causing business losses, are slightly generalised and lack depth. While the position is clear throughout, the development of ideas could be more thoroughly substantiated with broader examples to reach a higher band. Overall, the response meets the core requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised logically with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs supporting the main argument, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as 'To commence with', 'Another vital consideration', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'tolerate to opposite sex' and 'each others'. Overall, the logical progression is clear, though cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat repetitive and forced.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'contentious', 'pragmatic', and 'justification'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'some opponent assert' (opponents), 'mixed-school' (mixed schools), 'tolerant to opposite sex' (tolerant of the opposite sex), and 'speaking skils' (skills). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching the higher bands where precision and natural collocation are required.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense, pluralisation, and preposition usage. Examples include 'do not able to deliver' (are not able), 'at early life' (early in life), 'excretes barriers' (exercises or removes barriers), and 'a large number of evidence supports' (a large amount of evidence supports). Although these errors do not severely impede comprehension, they occur frequently enough to demonstrate limited grammatical control when attempting complex forms, placing this response firmly at band 6.0.
