Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many schools around the world girls and boys are educated together in co-education. While, in some schools girls and boys are given education separately as they believe it is beneficial. In my essay I will explain both perspectives and reasons.

Co-education is very common in many parts of the world. Parents are open minded and they do not think that there is any problem with co-education. The girls studying in single-sex schools are shy around boys of their age and vice versa because they have no experience in communication with opposite gender of same age. The children studying in single-sex school, will eventually be exposed to an environment where they have to work with opposite gender when they are adults.

The parents who educate their children in same-sex schools believe that their children are free from any distractions. Especially girl's parents makes sure their daughter is safe and is not harmed by any males. In India, same-sex schools are common due to these reasons.

I have studied in same-sex school. I felt awkward in communicating with males. If i was exposed to an environment where boys were around me then i would not have faced this problem

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 198 words. This has a significant negative impact on Task Achievement as the ideas are underdeveloped and the prompt is not fully addressed. Although the student attempts to address the prompt by discussing both co-educational and single-sex schooling and presents a personal stance in the conclusion, the arguments lack sufficient extension and support. For example, the point about distractions and safety in single-sex schools is introduced in a single brief paragraph without elaboration. The position is somewhat clear, but the under-length nature of the essay prevents a full exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into short paragraphs, which helps establish a basic structure, but the logical progression is weak due to the brevity of the text. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes mechanical, such as 'In my essay I will explain both perspectives' and 'The parents who educate their children...'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'Especially girl's parents makes sure', where pronoun and possessive agreement falters. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are underdeveloped and fail to guide the reader smoothly through a well-developed argument. Overall, the arrangement shows some basic coherence, but cohesive relationships between sentences are often missing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, such as 'schools', 'children', 'girls', and 'boys'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'girl's parents makes sure' (should be 'parents of girls' or 'girls' parents') and 'opposite gender of same age'. While the writer attempts some less common terms like 'co-education', 'perspective', and 'distractions', the overall lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. Spelling and word formation are generally acceptable, but the lack of varied vocabulary restricts the score for this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'While, in some schools girls and boys are given education separately as they believe it is beneficial.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including comma splices ('Parents are open minded and they do not think...') and subject-verb agreement issues ('girl's parents makes sure'). Conditional structures also contain errors, as seen in 'If i was exposed to an environment where boys were around me then i would not have faced this problem'. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader, though basic communication is generally maintained.
