Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary societies, the trend of co-education has become increasingly popular around the world, and therefore, girls and boys are encouraged to study in mixed schools in early age. Some argue that both genders should study in separate institutions to perform better at school and concentrate on studies. However, I firmly contend that co-educational schools are substantially advantageous for developing confidence and speaking skills.

To start with, one primary benefit of mixed schools is that they offer an open evironment to both genders for interaction and communication. Due to lack of communication, they usually make false assumptions rather than speaking directly to each other, and are mostly unfamiliar to the language can be used for opposite genders. Therefore, schools provide them an environment where they can develop a respectful language for reducing misunderstanding when they are engaged in classroom activities. To cite an example, the preparation of assignments, presentations, and exams with each other would help enhance their understading and improve communication.

Another positive consideration is that girls usually feel confused, emotional and shy when they communicate with boys. A rapid engagement in recreational activities and participation in functions, gaming activities, and events at schools help increase understading and cooperation among both genders. As a result, they learn to control emotions and become emotionally strong. For instance, an exposure and interaction of girls with boys may develop their emotions initially, however, they would learn to normalise this behavior by the time.

Admittedly, although studying in single-sex schools have some benefits to get good grades and perform well without being distracted by the opposite gender, it is more beneficial to study in mixed schools which provides a natural environment for them to learn about the behavior and attitude of others. For instance, learning early in life about opposite gender would help them to perform effectively and confidently in an organization in the future where they would have to obviously work with each other. As a result, it would make the business more successful by the cooperation and combined decision-making of each other.

To conclude, although differing viewpoints persist, plenty of evidence supports the perspective that the co-education system has more advantages to develop speaking skills and enhance understanding. Therefore, this approach is both effective and pragmatic for long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on co-education versus single-sex schooling and supporting it with relevant arguments. The writer puts forward logical reasons regarding confidence, communication skills, and preparation for the future workplace. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some arguments, such as the claim that girls feel confused and emotional when communicating with boys, are slightly underdeveloped and could benefit from more nuanced reasoning or precise examples. Nevertheless, the main task requirements are met effectively, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptor where all parts of the task are addressed and a clear position is presented throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Progression is generally maintained throughout the response. Cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Another positive consideration', and 'To conclude' are used to structure the ideas, though some transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their placement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as communication, emotional development, and future workplace benefits. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional minor cohesion issues appear between sentences, placing this performance solidly at Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'co-educational', 'substantially advantageous', 'recreational activities', and 'pragmatic'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For instance, 'evironment' contains a spelling error, 'unfamiliar to the language can be used' has grammatical and lexical awkwardness, and 'develop their emotions' is an unnatural collocation. Despite these occasional errors and limitations in precision, meaning is never impeded, making Band 6.0 an accurate reflection of the lexical control demonstrated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'which provides a natural environment for them to learn about the behavior and attitude of others'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including subject-verb agreement issues ('studying in single-sex schools have'), preposition misuse ('unfamiliar to the language can be used'), and missing articles. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur regularly enough to prevent the essay from reaching Band 7, where frequent error-free sentences and better control are expected.
