Student answer (Band 6.0)

Opinions are divided on whether boys and girls should be educated together in mixed schools, or if they both get additional benefits when taught in seperate schools. I strongly agree that boys and girls should be educated in co-educational schools, primarily because it helps building up confidence and develop social skills in both genders.

The primary reason why i agree with this view is that co-education helps in building up confidence. This is because majority of students that pass out from single-sex schools still are afraid to deliver a speech or presentation in front of mixed sex audience. The reason behind is this that they have only taken assignment and presented in front of the same gender audience. Studying in co-educational schools help overcome this problem as both genders take part in number of classroom activities. This serves as a root in building up confidence in boys and girls and helping them take on any future problems much more easily. For instance, a boy from a mixed school will perform better with full confidence in front of large audience as compared to a boy from single-sex school. Therefore, mixed education provides more benefits.

Another important reason is that mixed academic education plays a significant role in social skills development for both boys and girls. A notable number of boys studying in single-sex schools do not have the basic manners on how to engage a coversation with a girl. This is because they do not have any exposure regarding this and it is particularly significant because these boys will become employed in the future. Providing co-education eliminates this problem and further help in development of social and communication skills in both boys and girls. These communication skills are the basic requirment for empolyment in this modern world. For instance, a person who cant engage in a conversation with the opposite gender will not survive in the corporate offices.

In conclusion, I believe that co-education provides several benefits as compared to single-sex school. This is because co-education helps building up confidence and basic communication and social skills which are of particular significance in the modern world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt, taking a strong, well-defined position in favour of co-educational schools. The main ideas—building confidence and developing social skills—are relevant and directly tied to the question. Each body paragraph attempts to extend these ideas with explanations and examples, such as comparing the ability of students from single-sex versus mixed schools to speak in front of a mixed-gender audience. However, the development tends to rely on generalisations rather than deep, highly specific argumentation, which places the response firmly at Band 6.0 or 7.0. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed adequately with a clear position maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall progression, divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on distinct ideas, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'The primary reason why...', 'Another important reason is that...', and 'In conclusion', which help structure the text. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise (e.g., 'The reason behind is this that...'), and some transitions feel slightly mechanical. While the logical organisation is generally clear, the execution of cohesive elements lacks the flexibility and smooth flow required for higher band levels.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using topic-related terms like 'co-educational', 'single-sex schools', and 'corporate offices'. There are, however, noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'pass out' (instead of graduate), 'mixed academic education', and spelling slips like 'seperate' and 'requirment'. Less common items are attempted with varying degrees of success, and these minor word-choice inaccuracies occasionally detract from precision. Despite these flaws, the vocabulary remains sufficient to communicate the main ideas without impeding the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'a person who cant engage in a conversation with the opposite gender will not survive'). There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('in front of large audience'), punctuation issues with lower-case 'i', and subject-verb or preposition errors ('helps building up', 'exposure regarding this'). While these errors do not seriously impede communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a Band 7.0 level.
