IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A vast majority of educational institutes across the globe like schools, colleges and universities are now promoting co-educational learning. While some people still believe boys and girls can only excel and benefit from education if they are taught in seperate schools. I strongly disagree with this belief and approach, as sex specific education hinders better communication, equal opportunities and self confidence.
One major reason is that, when children are sent in single-sex schools, they never deal with opposite gender, and eventually when they progress in their professional career they are relectant to speak, perform, and excel as they were always exposed with same gender. Take one notable example, a girl who is in HR department, and the role is to interview different candidates on daily basis. She will be relectant and shy to speak and confidently do her job, as she never had an exposure to boys.
Secondly, if authorities make separate schools for both the genders, there is a highest probability present that boys will take the strategic advantage, as much of the technical roles in engineering, veterinary and surgery are performed by boys as compared to girls. There will be a difference in courses taught among girls and boys, eventually girls will end up learning basic arts, and benefit will be given to boys.
Overall, co-education provides equal and un-biased opportunities to both genders, it should be further encouraged. The idea of single-sex schools must be abandoned, as it will never allow boys and girls to have more exposure, better communication, absolute confidence and same platform to excel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear stance against single-sex schools and in favour of co-education. Your position is maintained throughout the essay, fulfilling the core requirements of this level. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. For instance, your first body paragraph provides a specific example of an HR professional, but your second paragraph relies on an assertion regarding engineering courses without sufficient supporting evidence or elaboration. To reach the next level, you need to ensure that every main idea is extended and fully supported with clear examples or explanations, avoiding generalisations that lack detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Ideas are organised into logical paragraphs, and you use basic cohesive devices such as 'One major reason is that,' 'Secondly,' and 'Overall' to guide the reader through your argument. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as the dangling phrase 'Take one notable example, a girl who...' where the transition could be smoother. Additionally, paragraph progression could be more tightly managed to ensure a seamless flow between ideas. To improve further, you should incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that your sentences link together effortlessly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary provides an adequate range for the task, allowing you to clearly communicate your thoughts on education. You attempt less common vocabulary such as 'co-educational,' 'strategic advantage,' and 'un-biased,' but there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and spelling. For example, you wrote 'seperate' instead of 'separate,' 'relectant' instead of 'reluctant,' and 'genders' where 'gender' is more appropriate. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in spelling and word form. To achieve a higher band, you should expand your vocabulary range and pay closer attention to collocations and spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response, such as 'While some people still believe boys and girls can only excel...' and 'when children are sent in single-sex schools, they never deal with opposite gender.' There are several grammar and punctuation errors, including preposition misuse ('sent in single-sex schools' instead of 'sent to'), article omission ('opposite gender' instead of 'the opposite gender'), and sentence fragment issues where a dependent clause is punctuated as a complete sentence ('...if they are taught in seperate schools. I strongly disagree...'). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication. To move higher, you need to increase your control over complex sentence structures and eliminate frequent minor errors in prepositions and articles.
