IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

I disagree with this because education is that thing which have no restriction no age limit so when there are schools and both girls and boys are sitting together and take education so there is no specific arugue on this topic.

some education i knew that which are oly for boys or only for girls so you can secide one day for boys and one day for girls to give them some other education about there daily life style so i think so this is right for students.

although co education is not bad both have rights to study so there is no comparispon because all mens and women are same no one is big or small in the eye of god.also co education are also very helpful and good for students so they can easily change their mind and get new freinds and the comparison of girls and boys were removed from their mind because this is only a myth that women cannot studied with men.there is only things made by society dumb people who didnot do anything in their life so they were start doing comparison,

both are blessing of god and both have right to take education and there is no big problem if boys and girls studied together

I am also studied in co education and there are around 22 girls and 20 boys were in same class and we studied together and if some one face difficulty we all helped him and we also do group studied etc we done all things but never heared any complain from parents regarding co education but although happily done their child admission in co education

in this conclusion its seem that co education is not bad although is good from childre nature to change their lifstyle. also both haverights to take education.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing disagreement with single-sex education and supporting co-education, but the ideas are limited and under-developed. The student presents a basic position right from the start by stating 'I disagree with this because education is that thing which have no restriction', but fails to sustain a well-supported argument throughout. Instead of fully exploring reasons like social development or academic benefits, the points tend to wander into repetitive assertions, such as 'both are blessing of god and both have right to take education'. Personal experience is introduced with the statement 'I am also studied in co education', but it is presented as a simple anecdote rather than a developed example that strengthens the argument. Overall, the task is addressed only partially, placing the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The organisation of the text lacks clear overall progression and logical structure. Ideas are grouped into a few massive blocks of text rather than well-managed paragraphs, with the second half of the essay consisting of a single run-on sentence structure. Cohesive devices are largely inadequate or missing, relying on basic connectors like 'and' or repetitive phrases such as 'so I think so' and 'also'. Furthermore, referencing and pronoun use are frequently unclear, as seen in phrases like 'both have rights to study so there is no comparispon because all mens and women are same'. The overall arrangement lacks the logical sequencing and clarity required to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for expressing basic ideas. The writer relies on simple, everyday words and repeats them frequently, such as 'education', 'study', and 'co education'. There are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, collocation, and word form, including 'arugue' instead of argument, 'daily life style', 'comparispon', 'freinds', and 'studied' used in place of 'study'. Spelling errors and incorrect word formations appear throughout the text, such as 'heared', 'complain', and 'haverights'. While the meaning can generally be extracted with effort, these errors and the lack of a broader lexical range cause noticeable difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on basic, coordinate sentences linked by conjunctions. Attempts at more complex sentence forms are consistently faulty, resulting in massive run-on sentences that lack proper punctuation, such as the lengthy sentence beginning with 'although co education is not bad...'. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, agreement, and articles, including 'education is that thing which have no restriction', 'some education i knew', 'womens cannot studied with men', and 'if some one face difficulty we all helped him'. Punctuation is largely neglected, with missing capitalisation and full stops throughout, leading to frequent errors that constantly cause difficulty and strain for the reader.
