Student answer (Band 6.0)

In a lot of countries co-education is provided to students, but it is believed by some that boys and girls should not be schooled together. I totally disagree with statement because when children are brought up in uni-sex school system, they are more prone to confidence issues and they are most likely to have prejudice against the opposite gender. Conversely, those students, who have gone through mixed education system are better at communicating with their counter sex and they are more likely to understand each other at later stages of life.

Firstly, confidence related problems are very common in students that have not been educated in mixed schools. When they are given an oppurtunity to talk with their peers they are not able to communicate easily. The lack of interaction in a segregated environment limits their ability to interact in a mixed environment. That lack of ability to communicate is translated into their demeanor and they are preceived as under confdent. Moreover, separately schooled students have prejudice against each other. The alienation from others sex in young age makes them believe in stereotypes that are not true. For example, the boys that have been taught in all boys schools think that girls are less intelligent and the girls that have gone through uni-sex education deem boys as ruthless.

On the other hand, they mixed schooling help the students to be better at communication. Since childhood, they have been given the oppurtunity to communicate. These children learn the social cues of opposite gender much better, thus, communication with opposite gender does not bother them. Additonally, these students has improved ability to understand their counter parts is way better because they have spent a major part of their childhood in their opposite sex people. They do not divide themselves in the division of sexes but deal as a fellow human being.

In conclusion, single sex schools should not be seen as beneficial due to numerous disdvantages of uni-sex schooling such as problems with confidence and enimity for eachother. Meanwhile, mix education provides students that are better rehearsed to communicate and understand eachother.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and well-developed position against single-sex schooling and in favour of mixed education. Throughout the essay, your main ideas—such as the development of social confidence and the reduction of gender prejudices—are extended and supported with logical explanations and examples, such as how students in all-boys schools might develop misconceptions about girls. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise your assertions regarding segregated schools without qualifying your claims. To move into higher bands, ensure that your arguments acknowledge nuances or counter-arguments more comprehensively, while maintaining the clear overarching position you have established.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, fully satisfying the requirements of the lower band while showing glimpses of the next. You use paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately to separate your introduction, distinct body paragraphs focusing on separate arguments, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'Conversely', 'Firstly', and 'On the other hand', which guide the reader through your arguments. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'they mixed schooling help', and some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. To achieve a higher band, focus on ensuring smoother transitions between sentences and more precise referencing throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your opinions clearly. You attempt some less common items and subject-related terminology, such as 'co-education', 'segregated environment', and 'alienation'. However, there are noticeable limitations in lexical control and word choice, including instances of incorrect word forms like 'uni-sex school system' instead of 'single-sex', 'counter sex' instead of 'opposite sex', 'under confdent', and spelling errors such as 'oppurtunity', 'preceived', 'Additonally', and 'disdvantages'. Furthermore, awkward collocations like 'enimity for eachother' recur. To improve this score, you should focus on expanding your use of precise vocabulary, improving lexical precision, and eliminating basic spelling and word-form errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully constructing multi-clause sentences such as 'Conversely, those students, who have gone through mixed education system are better at communicating with their counter sex'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors relating to articles, plurals, prepositions, and agreement. Examples include 'I totally disagree with statement', 'the mixed schooling help', 'these students has improved ability', and missing articles before singular countable nouns. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist across the essay and prevent the writing from achieving error-free control in the majority of sentences. To reach a higher level, you need to tighten your control over grammatical agreements, article usage, and complex sentence structures.
