Student answer (Band 5.5)

In contemparory world, many believe that boys and girls should be educated in a mixed school whereas others argue that girls and boys should be educated seperately in a single gender school. I agree with the statement of both the genders should be educated in the same institution. This essay will discuss the views with some relevent examples.

On the one hand, one of the major factor is to educate both girls and boys on sex education, equal rights and many other factors, this is due to the fact there sholud not be any awkwardness in between both the genders in the future after they finished their schooling. In a research in the USA, the researchers have found that the boys who studied at a same-gender school were more confident in talking to girls whereas the boys from single-gender school were a little hasitant or shy talking to girls and the same found in girls.

On the other hand, while studiying together in a mixed schools both girls and boys develope respect for the opposite sex and they are taught that both the genders have equal rights in the modern world as in the old society females were having no right and used to be in control or obey the orders of their father, husband or any other male in the house. Furthermore, this removes the barrier of gender discrimination by studying in a mixed school. For example, in countries like Afganisthan, Pakistan and the gulf countries there are seperate schools for boys and girl and in most of the cases there is no schooling for girls. Additionally, this type of schooling creates a barrier between the girls and boys as the males are the dominant member of the society.

To conclude, from my perspective, I strongly oppose the concept of the single-gender school whereas there should be which educates both girls and boys in a same class rooms.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing co-educational schooling and presenting a clear position agreeing with mixed-gender education. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, while the main arguments regarding social comfort and gender respect are introduced, some points are under-developed or rely on broad generalisations rather than deep extension. The introduction outlines the writer's stance, and the conclusion restates it, fulfilling the core requirements for this level. To move to a higher level, the writer would need to fully develop all main ideas with more specific examples and robust explanations, avoiding repetitive or loosely supported assertions throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, allowing the reader to follow the writer's line of thought. However, the organisation lacks a clear, seamless overall progression at times, and cohesive devices are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences where pronoun links or logical connectors do not flow smoothly. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and that transitions between sentences and paragraphs establish a clearer, more natural progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating central ideas about education and gender roles. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'contemparory', 'seperately', 'hasitant', 'studiying', and 'Afganisthan', alongside awkward collocations like 'a same-gender school'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a limited and developing control over less common lexical items. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocations, and eliminate spelling mistakes that detract from the overall quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting multi-clause structures such as 'while studiying together in a mixed schools both girls and boys develope respect'. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'one of the major factor is', missing articles, and incorrect prepositional patterns. Although these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist throughout the text and demonstrate limited grammatical control. To reach the next level, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences, improve control over complex grammatical structures, and refine punctuation and article usage.
