Student answer (Band 6.0)

Co-education is a widely debated issue. Many people argue that girls and boys should study separately in gender specified schools because studying together in same institute may divert their attention and focus from studies. Although, this statement is not entirely wrong, in my opinion co-education is the need of the hour because it may develop interpersonal and social skills among students which will help them later in their lives.

On one hand, people believe that co-education is bad for the society as it may lead to numerous issues such as lack of concentration on studies, undermining social norms and moral issues, and develop some safety concerns. For instace, a student studying in co-education is more likely to fall in premature relationships which will ultimately distractt him from his studies. Society and culture play vital role in normalising co-education. In Muslim society co-education is discouraged preferring theconcepts of maddarissas and uni-sex schools.

On the other hand, people who are in favour of co-education argue that co-education imparts necessary skills to students which help them in later stages of their life. For example, a person studying in co-education will better handle a situation where he has to work with girls in work place environment. Additionally, a student who study in co-education will be more good in relationships as he or she would be able to understand their opposite gender better as compared to those who do not study in co-education. Furthermore, it improves communication skills and boosts overall confidence of students. Therefore, co-education has positive impacts on students and they get more benefits from it rather studying in uni-sex schools.

In conclusion, schools where students are studying in co-education has more benfits than uni-sexschools because it develops their ethical, moral and social values and made students prepared for the practical life where they have to work and deal with opposite gender in daily life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position regarding co-education. The student covers both sides of the argument, acknowledging potential concerns about distraction and safety, while also arguing strongly for the social and interpersonal benefits of mixed schools. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the mention of Muslim society and madrasas touches on cultural perspectives, but this point lacks detailed support or exploration. Similarly, the benefits discussed in the third paragraph are introduced logically but tend to generalise without specific examples from personal experience or broader knowledge. To reach a higher level, the ideas need deeper extension and more precise supporting evidence throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, distinct body paragraphs exploring opposing views, and a concluding summary. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, moving from the introduction of the topic to the arguments against, the arguments in favour, and finally a restatement of the writer's opinion. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts between paragraphs, such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion.' However, the cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is at times slightly unclear, such as the pronoun shifts and vague links between sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, though closer attention to seamless transitions would elevate the organizational quality further.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'interpersonal,' 'undermining,' and 'imparts.' However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, word-choice errors, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'instace' instead of 'instance,' 'distractt' instead of 'distract,' and 'uni-sex' instead of 'single-sex.' Phrases like 'more good in relationships' and 'benfits' demonstrate limitations in collocation and word form. While these errors do not seriously impede overall communication, they restrict the lexical score because the vocabulary lacks the precision and control required for higher bands. Expanding precise academic collocations and improving spelling accuracy are key areas for development.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as concessive clauses ('Although, this statement is not entirely wrong...') and relative clauses ('...skills which will help them...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('in work place environment'), subject-verb agreement issues ('schools where students are studying... has more benfits'), and awkward prepositional usage. Punctuation errors, such as comma splices or missing commas after introductory phrases, also appear. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede overall communication, allowing the reader to follow the writer's core arguments without significant difficulty. To improve, the student should focus on tightening complex sentence control and eliminating minor structural inaccuracies.
