Student answer (Band 6.0)

Co-education in school is a norm in many parts of the world, but some people believe that single-sex schools have an upper hand when it comes to teaching young adults. I firmly believ ethat mixed schools offer a lot more opportunities to adapt to a real social situation which is deprived in single-sex schools.

In terms of social interaction, mixed schools has a lot of beneficial factors. Primarily, the mode of interaction between opposite genders should be normalised at an early age. As with time it is normal for young adults to develop an interest in the opposite gender. Therefore, the school must teach them how to treat them as equals without sexualising them. For instance, not allowing the boys and girls to interact with each other at school can create a misconception about their intellectual abilities, and can deprive them of useful knowledge that they otherwise would have found helpful. This can instil the ability of teamwork and cooperative behaviour even in the workplace,

Single-sex schools ensure a safer learning environment for the girls and boys. As well as help them focus on their studies without getting distracted. However, all this ends up having a negative effect, where the desire to talk to the opposite gender might grow stronger as they are kept apart for a long time. It is seen in many secular countries, that the people growing up in seoarately schooled groups tend to have a prejudice against the opposite gender which can turn hostile.

In conclusion, I believe that mixed-sex schools must be made mandatory in every country so the children grow with a healthy mindset and fair competition.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on co-educational versus single-sex schooling. The main arguments are generally relevant, fulfilling the criteria for a balanced discussion with a definitive personal stance provided in the conclusion. However, certain ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the discussion on social interaction and workplace teamwork is supported by some reasoning, while the counter-argument regarding safety and distraction in single-sex schools is introduced in the third paragraph but remains somewhat underdeveloped and abrupt. To reach a higher level, every main idea needs to be thoroughly extended and supported with fully elaborated explanations and relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic introduced from the beginning. Ideas are logically grouped into paragraphs, distinguishing between social benefits, single-sex considerations, and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is at times mechanical or somewhat faulty, such as the sentence fragment starting with 'As with time' in the second paragraph, and the reliance on simple transitional phrases like 'In terms of' and 'In conclusion'. Referencing within and between sentences is generally clear, but paragraph transitions could be smoother. To achieve a higher standard, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while maintaining natural logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'co-educational', 'normalised', 'misconception', and 'prejudice'. Communication is not impeded by lexical choices, but there are noticeable errors in word form, spelling, and word choice throughout the text, including typos like 'believ ethat', grammatical word-form slips like 'seoarately', and slight awkwardness in phrasing such as 'social situation which is deprived in single-sex schools'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. To advance further, the writer must demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocation, alongside error-free spelling of less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation that prevent a higher rating. Instances of punctuation and sentence boundary issues include the fragment 'As with time it is normal...' and the dangling comma splice in the final sentence of the second paragraph. Additionally, there are minor agreement and prepositional issues, such as 'mixed schools has' instead of 'have'. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist throughout the text and demonstrate inconsistent control over complex sentence structures. To improve, the writer should aim for a higher proportion of error-free sentences and ensure complex grammatical patterns are constructed with greater accuracy.
