Student answer (Band 4.5)

according to my observations and opinion I believe children of the opposite sex co-existing within the same classroom could bring a lot of benefits according to my opinion. Students learn confidence ,meaning become more confident in life with not only expressing themselves but there ideas too for example when they go into uni or at work being confident would help them in an amazing, how to co-exist with the opposite gender , meaning they also learn how to co-exist in the same room with the opposite sex without feeling extremely unsafe for example the girls would learn how to protect themselves and take a stand for themselves against predators, patients, children also learn how to be patient in situations were they don't really have options , teamwork is also one of the major things they learn to do helping each other in various tasks example being both genders would learn how to work with each other at work or in life overall, girls learn how to set boundaries for themselves and boys learn to respect the boundaries set by the ladies meaning girls learn to take their stand and how to protect themselves , boys also learn how to respect women and protect them meaning in a class with girls boys learn how to treat women and how to respect their boundaries, they also learn that life doesn't give them chances itself but instead they have to fight for it in a room with two different genders , chances are limited because of more competition

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task partially by presenting a personal opinion regarding co-educational schools, but the position is not always clear and tends to drift into general statements about life and workplace competition rather than focusing squarely on the educational benefits. Ideas are limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive assertions rather than well-supported arguments. For instance, the point about learning to co-exist is mentioned multiple times in slightly different ways, such as 'how to co-exist with the opposite gender' and 'helping each other in various tasks', without being extended with specific examples from schooling. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to present a clear, well-maintained position throughout and develop each main idea with relevant explanations and specific examples related directly to the educational context.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is some organisation present in the response, but it lacks clear overall progression and structure. The entire text consists of a single, massive run-on sentence without any paragraph breaks, which makes following the logical flow extremely challenging for the reader. Cohesive devices are largely absent or inadequate; the writer relies heavily on repetitive conjunctions like 'and' and conversational transitions like 'for example' embedded haphazardly into the text rather than using proper sentence demarcation and paragraphing. Referencing is also unclear in places, such as when abrupt shifts occur between concepts like student confidence, workplace integration, boundary setting, and competition. To improve, the writer must divide the response into clear paragraphs, use proper punctuation to separate ideas, and employ a wider range of cohesive devices to guide the reader logically through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey a basic opinion. The writer attempts some topic-related vocabulary, such as 'co-educational', 'predators', and 'teamwork', but noticeable errors in word choice and repetition occur throughout the text. For instance, phrases like 'co-existing within the same classroom' and 'co-exist in the same room' repeat the same lexical items rather than demonstrating flexibility. Additionally, minor awkwardness in word choice appears, such as grouping 'predators, patients' in a school context, which causes some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer should use a wider and more precise range of vocabulary, avoid repetitive phrasing, and ensure that all chosen words are appropriate for an academic discussion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is severely restricted because the entire essay is written as one long, continuous sentence lacking proper full stops or varied sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex clauses, these are frequently faulty and poorly controlled due to the absence of correct punctuation and segmentation. Frequent errors occur in punctuation, run-on structures, and syntactic boundaries, which can cause significant difficulty for the reader in parsing the meaning. For example, clauses are joined by commas or coordinating conjunctions endlessly without periods. To improve, the writer must demonstrate control over basic sentence boundaries, incorporate a mix of simple and complex sentences correctly punctuated, and reduce the frequency of grammatical errors.
