IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some individuals argue that students should be taught in gender specific shools, even though co-education is being practiced in many parts of the world at the moment. I disagree with this sentiment because the problem of unequal learning opportunities might arise and students tend to develop a sense of curiosity for the opposite sex in such environments.

Single-sex schools can cause issues like unfair opportunities in academics. Most girl's schools are provided with female teachers and vice versa. If a highly qualified male educator is being refused to teach in a female only school, then this might take away the opportunity of better quality education from them. For instance, an online friend of mine shared her experience of not getting a scholarship abroad because of lack of quality education for girls, whereas his brother got one while being in the boys campus of the same school. Both of them were highly motivated. The same can be true for boys as well. This is how equal opportunities are being limited in gender based schools.

Another point, because of which I disagree with the concept of separate education, is such an environment curates a sense of curiosity among individuals. As humans, we tend to draw to things which are limited to us. Similarly, female students who are kept in an isolated space with no contact with male students might share the same feeling of curiosity which further causes issues and same is true for male students. For instance, students of single-sex schools tend to get involved more, in different activities when they are admitted to co-education in university, compared with students from mixed education system. This curiosity can be limited by studing in mixed schools growing up.

To sum it up, I diagree with the concept of gender specific schools mainly because students might not get equal opportunities. Another reason is single-sex schools' students get curious which is not the case in co-education which is currently being practiced in a lot of areas of the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I disagree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give two relevant reasons: unequal educational opportunities and students’ curiosity about the opposite sex, with examples intended to support each. This meets the task well, and the scholarship anecdote adds a specific illustration. However, the first argument relies on a broad claim that girls’ schools are generally staffed by women and boys’ schools by men, without showing how this necessarily limits teaching quality. The second point is less fully explained: the link between curiosity and students becoming more involved in university activities is asserted rather than demonstrated. Develop these explanations more carefully and qualify generalisations to make the support more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Topic sentences such as “Single-sex schools can cause issues” and “Another point” help readers follow the argument. You also use examples in the relevant paragraphs. Some connections, however, are mechanical or unclear. The second body paragraph begins with the awkward fragment-like construction “Another point, because of which I disagree…,” and “This is how equal opportunities are being limited” does not precisely explain the preceding example. The conclusion repeats the main points but adds little synthesis. Use clearer links between claims, explanations, and evidence, and vary transitions so the progression feels more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “unequal learning opportunities,” “highly qualified,” “scholarship,” and “gender based schools.” These choices communicate your main ideas, and attempts at more formal vocabulary show some range. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “curates a sense of curiosity,” “draw to things,” and “get involved more, in different activities.” There are also spelling errors such as “shools,” “studing,” and “diagree,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. For example, “creates curiosity” and “are drawn to things” would express your intended meanings more idiomatically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional forms in “If a highly qualified male educator is being refused…” and a relative clause in “students who are kept in an isolated space.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “Another point… is such an environment curates” needs a grammatical link, such as “is that such an environment creates.” In “students… might share the same feeling… which further causes issues,” the reference of “which” is unclear. The sentence beginning “For instance, an online friend…” also shifts from “her” to “his brother,” making the relationships confusing. Work on clause construction, pronoun reference, and consistent sentence patterns while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
