Student answer (Band 5.0)

The importance of the education of girls and boys together in co-educational or mixed schools, which was always debatable has now become more controversial with many people claiming that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single sex school while others reject this notion. The substantial influence of this trend has sparked controversy over the potential impact in the recent years. This essay will further elaborate in favouring the positive as well as negative impact of this trend and thus will lead to a logical conclusion

Analyzing the statement and explaining further, the first and the foremost reason behind this is studying together will help boys and girls to understand and respect each other. In single sex school students might feel more comfortable to participate in the school activities which results in a strong relationship and teamwork with each other.

categorically discussing, it cannot be ignored that there are several other aspects behind this trend such as co-educational schools teach boys and girls to respect and understand each other. Students can share their ideas, work on group projects and participate in different activities together. This helps them improve their communication skills and learn teamwork.

In conclusion, this essay acknowledges the basic school of thought behind this idea and supports the advancement it is making, without jeopardizing the demerits it comes with.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response is relevant to the topic and gives a reason for mixed education: students can learn to respect one another, share ideas and develop teamwork. It also briefly recognises a possible benefit of single-sex schools, namely that students may feel more comfortable participating. However, the position on the question is not clearly stated, and the discussion does not explain how these points support a particular degree of agreement. The opening promises to discuss positive and negative impacts, but the essay does not develop that comparison or provide a specific example. The response is 210 words, so it is 40 words below the required minimum; the 12 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop a clear position and support each main point with explanation or an example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response into an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas about respect, communication and teamwork are related to the topic. However, progression is difficult to follow because the first body paragraph introduces the benefit of single-sex schools, then the next repeats the case for co-education without clearly comparing the two. The conclusion refers vaguely to “the basic school of thought” and “the demerits,” so it does not clearly resolve the argument. Some linking phrases, such as “Analyzing the statement” and “categorically discussing,” sound formulaic and do not show the relationship between ideas. Use a clear paragraph plan, connect each paragraph to your position, and make references in the conclusion specific.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response shows some range beyond basic vocabulary, including “co-educational,” “controversy,” “participate,” “communication skills” and “teamwork.” These choices generally make the topic understandable. However, several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “the substantial influence of this trend,” “in favouring the positive as well as negative impact,” and “supports the advancement it is making.” The repeated use of “trend” also does not fit the discussion particularly well, since the essay is comparing types of schooling rather than describing a new development. Aim for more precise, natural collocations and avoid elaborate phrases when a direct expression is clearer. For example, state whether you support mixed schooling and explain its benefits in straightforward academic language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both longer sentences and simpler statements, and several sentences communicate their main meaning, for example, “Students can share their ideas, work on group projects and participate in different activities together.” However, control is uneven in the longer constructions. The opening sentence is difficult to manage and lacks clear punctuation around its introductory clause; “which was always debatable has now become” needs clearer clause boundaries. There are also errors in sentence boundaries and spacing, as in “each other. In,” and the conclusion’s structure, “without jeopardizing the demerits it comes with,” is unclear. Use shorter, controlled sentences where needed, check punctuation and articles, and practise combining clauses accurately rather than relying on long introductory structures.
