IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

People often argued that individuals are benefiting increasly in education if the two genders male and femal were separated from each others . therefore I strongly agree with this viepoint primarily due to this separation will allow every single sex to focus more in studies and make the teachers more confortable about sensitive topics .

On the one hand , the real main reasons why i support this view is that parents who are responseble about thier childern will be more confortable about thier children future this largely parents worry about thier children if they have any relationship at school , moreover boys and girls will focus more on thier studies and gives more attention on thier future .

furthermore another compelling reasons is about previncy for both girls and boys due to the twoo of them had privency for exemple girls who had more privancy than boys will keep it in secret .

On the other hand , people who disagree about separation of girls and boys can have some advantages for exemple they can help each other on studies because the proportion of intellegance goes for girls so boys will benefit on this

To same up , I really agree with people who believe that eduction should not mixe between girls and boys and this mainly for good reasons such as studies and privancy and also parents will be more confidence about thier children's studies and education .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion: you strongly support educating girls and boys separately. You give relevant reasons, including greater focus on studies, parental concerns, and privacy, and you briefly acknowledge the opposing view that students can help one another. However, the response addresses the issue only partially because these points are mostly asserted rather than explained or supported with specific examples. The claim that girls have a higher proportion of intelligence, for instance, is unclear and needs careful explanation or a more relevant example. The response also contains 240 words, so it does not meet the required minimum of 250. Develop each main reason with a clear explanation and an example to make your argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting single-sex education, a brief opposing point, and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify your overall position. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and several ideas are joined in long, unclear sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “the real main reasons” moves from parents’ concerns to students’ focus without clearly showing how the ideas connect. Linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “furthermore,” and “On the other hand” are attempted, but some are repetitive or do not introduce a fully developed contrast. Use one main idea per paragraph, organise supporting explanations in a logical order, and make references such as “this” and “them” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use a small range of topic-related vocabulary, including “co-educational,” “separated,” “sensitive topics,” “privacy,” and “advantages.” These choices show an attempt to discuss the issue beyond very basic terms. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or misspelled words make parts difficult to understand, such as “increasly,” “responseble,” “privency,” and “intellegance.” Some phrases are also unnatural or unclear, including “the proportion of intellegance goes for girls” and “keep it in secret.” Repeated use of “children,” “studies,” and “comfortable” further limits variety. Build a reliable set of accurate collocations for education and privacy, and check spelling and word forms carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, using clauses introduced by “because,” “if,” and “who.” This gives you a starting point for expressing reasons and contrasts. However, the range is limited, and errors are frequent; some sentences are difficult to follow. For example, “parents who are … will be more … this largely parents worry” combines clauses without a clear grammatical structure, while “boys and girls will focus more … and gives more attention” has inconsistent verb forms. There are also recurring problems with articles, plurals, agreement, and sentence boundaries. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly connected supporting clause, then check subject–verb agreement and punctuation. Greater control of these patterns would make your ideas easier to understand.
