Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many parts of the world, girls and boys study in co-educational schools, while some people argue that they should be educated separately. I strongly disagree with this view because co-educational schools help student to develop more confidence and practical skills.

The main reason I disagree is that combined educational institutes help children to overcome their shyness and increase confidence. This is particularly significant for their career growth, which leads students to discover various opportunities in their professional lives. For instance, a child who studies in a single-sex school may not be able to compete efficiently with other students in universities, where he studies with opposite gender for the first time. Therefore, it is essential for children to study in co-educational schools, which help them in character development.

Another compelling reason is that co-educational schools can allow parents to drop all their children at a single school, instead of dropping each child in a different school according to their gender. Parents can also check academic progress of their children in a single school, which saves their time. Moreover, these schools play an important role in the behavior of students towards their teachers and fellow students. Children may behave appropriately to different situations, when they train to study with opposite gender. As a result, co-educational institutes for students may reduce the burden of the governments because they do not need to invest in separate schools.

In conclusion, I firmly disagree with this view because co-educational schools helps students in their character development and reduce the burden on governments of building separate schools. For these reasons I believe that it is vital for boys and girls to study in the same schools.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly oppose single-sex education and support co-educational schools. You give relevant reasons, including confidence-building, preparation for university, convenience for parents, and reduced government costs. The example of a student encountering the opposite gender for the first time at university helps illustrate your first point. However, the argument about parents’ convenience is less directly connected to whether students benefit educationally, and the claims about behaviour and government savings are asserted rather than explained or supported. To strengthen the response, develop the educational benefits more fully and show how each example supports your view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking phrases such as “For instance,” “Therefore,” and “Moreover” help readers follow the argument, and the ideas generally progress logically. Some connections are less smooth, however. The second body paragraph moves from parents’ convenience to student behaviour and then government spending, so it contains several points without developing their relationship. The conclusion also repeats the main reasons rather than drawing them together. Group related ideas more tightly, and use clearer explanations between claims so that cohesion feels less dependent on signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “co-educational,” “character development,” “professional lives,” and “academic progress.” These choices communicate your ideas clearly, and you attempt some more formal expressions. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “combined educational institutes,” “compete efficiently,” and “behavior of students towards their teachers.” There is also some repetition of “schools,” “students,” and “children,” which limits flexibility. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, particularly when describing educational outcomes. For example, “mixed-gender schools” and “interact appropriately with peers” would express some of your points more idiomatically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses (“which leads students to discover…”) and subordinate clauses (“when they train to study…”). Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, especially with subject–verb agreement and articles: “co-educational schools helps” should be “co-educational schools help,” and “check academic progress” would be more natural as “check the academic progress.” In “help student to develop,” the plural “students” is needed. Review agreement, articles, and plural forms, and proofread the conclusion carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
