IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is offer argued whether girls and boys should study together or some argue that single-sex schools offer distinct benefits. I firmly agree with this view; while single-sex settings allows for tailored instruction, mixed gender schools are pivotal for social development.
On the one hand, single-sex education provides clear academic advantages. Teachers can adopt their teaching style to match how youngsters learn best. In addition, healthy rivalry between boys and girls often motivates students to outshine one another academically, pushing both genders to acheive standards; hence friendly competitions between genders can drive higher and personal academic achievements. For instance, both the individuals drive to surpass one another motivates both sides to achieve top grades and puch beyond their limits.
On the other hand, educating boys individually may have some drawbacks. Students may have fewer
opportunities to interact with the opposite gender, which can limit their communication skills and ability to work together. Moreover, they may develop misconceptions about each other due to the lack of regular interactions.
In conclusion, I believe co-education is more beneficial because it improves communication skills and prepare students for their future professional career.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
Your position is identifiable: you ultimately favour co-education, and you mention relevant points about tailored teaching, academic motivation, communication and misconceptions. However, the response only partially develops the question. The opening says you agree that single-sex schools offer benefits, but then argues that mixed schools are more beneficial, so your extent of agreement is not consistently clear. The academic advantages are asserted rather than explained, and the example about students surpassing one another repeats the same point without adding specific support. The conclusion is brief and does not resolve the contrast in your position. The response is also 62 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop reasons and examples. State your position consistently and extend each main idea with explanation or a relevant example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the broad organisation. However, progression within the first body paragraph is weak: the claims about teaching styles, rivalry and achievement overlap, and the example largely repeats the preceding sentence. The shift from initially agreeing with single-sex education to concluding that co-education is more beneficial also makes the overall line of argument difficult to follow. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “In addition” and “Moreover.” Build each paragraph around one distinct reason, connect explanation to evidence, and make the introduction, body and conclusion express the same position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-appropriate vocabulary, including “single-sex education,” “tailored instruction,” “social development,” “misconceptions” and “communication skills.” These choices show an attempt to discuss the issue beyond very basic terms. However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “adopt their teaching style” is less natural than “adapt their teaching methods,” while “achieve standards” and “higher and personal academic achievements” are unclear or awkward. There are also spelling errors such as “acheive” and “puch,” and “individually” does not accurately express the intended idea of being educated separately. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; using fewer ambitious phrases precisely will strengthen the argument more than adding ornate wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause beginning “while” and a relative clause in “misconceptions about each other due to the lack of regular interactions.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in agreement and sentence construction remain. For example, “single-sex settings allows” should use a plural verb, and “it improves communication skills and prepare students” needs parallel verb forms (“improves … and prepares”). The sentence beginning “For instance” is structurally unclear, with “both the individuals drive” not forming a clear grammatical subject. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, including the semicolon after the opening position and extra spaces. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, parallel structures and sentence boundaries, while keeping complex sentences clear.
