In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Student answer (Band 4.5)
I am not convinced that this statement contains a true view regarding the education of our kids, being separated in single-sex schools. It is widely believed that in the UK, schools who are designed to teach just boys or just girls have gained a huge success. Overall, they are favourable for families with sensitive children or for people who consider that their kids will learn more effectively, being beneficial for them and for the institution.
However. regarding my knowledge, I firmly believe that this is a challenge for the future adults. First, those schools are considerably expensive and why can't we send our kids in normal schools? Actually, I don't remember in the past, if we had special schools, or private schools.
In the UK, all those schools are private, they have different rules and if the parents want to register their child there,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
Your opening makes your position partly apparent: “I am not convinced” suggests disagreement with single-sex education. You also introduce potentially relevant points about cost and whether pupils learn more effectively. However, the response addresses the question only partially: it does not explain in a developed way how mixed or single-sex schooling affects children, and the claim that UK single-sex schools have “gained a huge success” is not supported with evidence or an example. The final sentence is unfinished, so the argument has no conclusion. The response is also 106 words below the required minimum, leaving too little space to develop reasons and examples. State your position clearly, explain two relevant reasons, and support them before concluding.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the opening introduces the issue, “However” signals a shift to your own view, and “First” introduces a reason. These markers help the reader follow the broad direction. However, progression is limited because the ideas are not fully connected or explained, and the paragraphing does not establish a clear sequence of developed arguments. The transition “However. regarding my knowledge” is interrupted by incorrect punctuation, while the final paragraph ends mid-sentence, leaving the discussion incomplete. Build a clear structure with an introduction, separate paragraphs for each reason, and a conclusion. Use linking phrases to show how each example supports your position rather than relying on isolated signposts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “co-educational,” “single-sex schools,” “sensitive children,” and “register their child.” These choices show an attempt to discuss education rather than relying entirely on general language. However, the range is limited, and several expressions are awkward or imprecise, which makes parts of the argument difficult to interpret. For example, “contains a true view” is not a natural way to refer to an opinion, and “schools who are designed” uses an unsuitable relative pronoun and phrasing. “Normal schools” is also vague; specify mixed schools. Aim for precise, natural collocations and use vocabulary to explain educational effects, such as classroom participation, academic performance, or social development.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentence forms, including “Overall, they are favourable for families with sensitive children or for people who consider that their kids will learn more effectively.” This shows an effort to connect ideas using subordinate clauses. However, the range remains limited, and errors in sentence construction and punctuation are frequent enough to make the response less clear. “However. regarding my knowledge” incorrectly separates the transition from the sentence, and “schools who are designed” has faulty agreement/reference. The clause “and why can't we send our kids in normal schools?” is not smoothly integrated with the preceding statement. The final sentence beginning “if the parents want to register” is incomplete. Practise writing complete sentences, checking subject–verb and pronoun agreement, and using punctuation to separate clauses accurately.
