Student answer (Band 6.0)

In most parts of the world, co-educational schools or mixed schools where girls and boys study together, are common, but there has been a debate among some people that single-sex schools give more benefit to the students.

From my perspective, I stand with the idea of mixed schools and agree that we should not divide education in the name of gender because when boys and girls study together, it not only shows equality, but also depicts the picture of a growth mindset of a nation.

Letting all genders study together will reduce gender bias among students and foster class competitiveness. This increases respect for each other in class, and children do get a chance to know each other more and discuss topics that are still taboo in the modern world. Example: periods, women's safety, gender equality, and show one.

I do respect everyone's thinking that everyone has their own point of view, but there are so many disadvantages of single-sex schools, like students never getting an environment where they get to know the thought process of the opposite gender, which can lead to issues with their communication skills, social skills, and how to behave with others and society in the future where they have to work with each other. The world will grow no matter what, so we should get our students ready for this; we can not grow in an isolated environment where there is no interaction between the boys and girls.

In conclusion, I would still stand by my idea and support the idea that mixed schools provide the students more benefits than single-sex schools, which isolate the student from thinking about the opposite gender, their dos and don'ts

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you support mixed schools, and you address the comparison with single-sex education. You give relevant reasons, including reduced gender bias, mutual respect, and preparation for future workplaces. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, you say mixed schooling “foster[s] class competitiveness” but do not show how this benefits students, and the list of taboo topics ends with the unclear phrase “show one.” The discussion of single-sex schools focuses mainly on limited interaction and its possible social effects, with little consideration of why some people favour them. Develop each main reason with a specific explanation or example to make the argument more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion that restates your view. Ideas generally progress from the benefits of mixed schooling to the drawbacks of separation, and linking phrases such as “From my perspective,” “but,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This organisation is effective, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. The sentence beginning “Example:” introduces a list without integrating it into the argument, while “I do respect everyone's thinking” does not clearly signal the specific opposing view being acknowledged. The final phrase, “their dos and don'ts,” also leaves the conclusion unfinished in meaning. Use clearer transitions between claims and examples, and ensure each paragraph develops one connected line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “gender bias,” “equality,” “communication skills,” and “isolated environment.” These expressions help convey your central argument, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, which limits the clarity and flexibility of your vocabulary. “Give more benefit” would be more naturally expressed as “offer greater benefits,” and “show one” is unclear in the list of topics. “The picture of a growth mindset of a nation” is also an awkward way to describe social progress. Aim for precise collocations and avoid phrases whose meaning is difficult to infer. More accurate wording would make your ideas sound more fluent and convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex structures, including the sentence beginning “because when boys and girls study together” and the longer explanation of how limited interaction may affect students. Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors reduce control. In the opening sentence, commas incorrectly separate “schools” from “are common”; the sentence would be clearer without them. “This increases respect for each other in class, and children do get a chance” has an awkward structure, and the list after “Example:” is not formed as a complete sentence. The final sentence also lacks clear punctuation and closure. Practise punctuating longer sentences and integrating examples into complete grammatical sentences while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
