IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that it is more beneficial for opposite genders to study separately in single-sex schools. I totally disagree with this opinion as studying together creates mutual understading that may help in future to intereact with opposite gender.

Co-education is really helpful because it helps students to understand each other at very young age. They study together in the same environment that boost their confidence to talk with opposite gender. For instance, a child who has studied in a single-sex school may face nervousness and hesitation to intereact with the opposite gender in life as the child is not used to talk with the other gender. As a result, that child may face hardship to talk with opposite gender or colleagues while working in an office in the future.

Similarly, get involved in extra co-curricular activities helps students to learn a lot. When reaching at home, that student will have more energy and courage to make new friends in the neighborhood. If a student study in a single-sex school, that student might remain an introvert and is not willing to be friends with the opposite gender. For instance, a boy who plays with girls in the school and study together, might be able to become more friendly and cooperative in future when the colleague might ask for assitance in office work.

To sum up, I would strongly disagree that students should study in co-educational and mixed schools to become more cooperative and confident person while talking to the opposite genders.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: “I totally disagree,” and the response stays focused on the benefits of co-education. You give relevant reasons, especially that studying together can build confidence and prepare students to interact with colleagues later. The examples about workplace communication help connect school experience to adult life. However, the second body paragraph is less fully developed: the link between extracurricular activities, having energy at home, and becoming more cooperative is not explained clearly. The conclusion also introduces an awkwardly phrased recommendation rather than restating your position precisely. To strengthen the response, develop each main reason with a clearer explanation and a specific, relevant example, and ensure the conclusion directly answers the question about the extent of your agreement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. “For instance,” “Similarly,” and “To sum up” help signal examples and the final position, so the reader can follow the general direction. However, progression within the second body paragraph is not consistently clear: the move from extracurricular activities to arriving home and making neighbourhood friends feels abrupt, and the connection to the main argument needs to be made explicit. Some references, such as “that student” and “the child,” are repeated and can make the writing sound mechanical. Organise each body paragraph around one clear reason, then explain it and give a directly related example. Use linking phrases selectively and make pronoun references unambiguous.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “single-sex schools,” “confidence,” “introvert,” and “cooperative.” These choices show an attempt to discuss social skills and future workplace relationships. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions reduce the accuracy and flexibility of the vocabulary: “understading,” “intereact,” and “assitance” are misspelled, while “hardship to talk” and “extra co-curricular activities” are not natural in these contexts. Repetition of “opposite gender” and “study together” also limits variety. Proofread spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases. For example, use “communicate with people of the opposite sex” and “take part in extracurricular activities” to express these ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional example beginning “If a student study in a single-sex school” and a reason clause with “as the child is not used to…”. This gives the response some structural variety, and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement and sentence construction. For example, “the same environment that boost their confidence” should use a verb agreeing with “environment,” and “If a student study” needs agreement between the subject and verb. The final sentence also has an unclear structure: “I would strongly disagree that students should study in co-educational and mixed schools” reverses the intended meaning. Practise checking agreement and ensure that each sentence expresses the intended position clearly; vary sentence patterns while maintaining accurate clauses.
