IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are a lot of co-educational institions all over the world. Many people argue that it would be more beneficial if male and female students are educated separetely rather than in mixed schools. I do not support this statement because I think there are more advantages of being taught together as they would learn to interact with the opposite gender and would show respect to each other.

Being in a mixed school, children would have to communicate with other gender regularly.

Consequently, they would learn how to behave with the opposite sex. It can be seen that many boys are not being able to communicate with girls at later age due to being shy which can be solved if he had to communicate with them from his childhood. So, if he is brought up in an environment where he would regularly communicate with the other sex, he would naturally have the social skills to effectively communicate with other. For example, a boy attending a school where he communicated with girls on regular basis would have the confidence to talk to a girl without any hesitation.

Another advantage is that they would learn more about gender equality. They would be taught to treat each other equal in terms of everything. If they started believing each other equal then there would be no gender discrimination. It would be great for them for their future as they would not think of depriving a person of his rights for being male or female. For instance, if boy would treat his wife equal and try to share responsibilies with her if he himself believes her equal to him.

In conclusion, children should be learning in a combined schools in order to be able to learn how to effectively communicate with opposite gender and also to learn to think the opposite gender equal to himself.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you oppose single-sex education and support mixed schools. You address the question with two relevant reasons—developing communication skills and encouraging gender equality—and provide examples, such as a boy gaining confidence speaking with girls and future partners sharing responsibilities. This covers the task, but the ideas are not equally developed: the communication point is explained in more detail, while the equality argument relies on broad claims such as “there would be no gender discrimination” without showing how schooling would produce that outcome. The response also gives little consideration to why some people favour separate schools. To strengthen the argument, explain the limits or conditions of your claims and briefly acknowledge the opposing view before showing why your position remains stronger.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Consequently,” “Another advantage,” and “For instance” help readers follow the argument. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated references to “the opposite gender” and repeated use of “would.” Some references are also unclear: in “if he had to communicate with them,” the shift from “many boys” to “he” makes the example less consistent, and “other” in “communicate with other” lacks a clear noun. Improve progression by varying transitions, keeping pronouns consistent, and linking each example explicitly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your ideas, including “co-educational,” “gender equality,” “gender discrimination,” and “responsibilities.” These terms show an attempt to discuss the issue beyond very basic language. However, the range is somewhat repetitive, especially in repeated uses of “communicate,” “gender,” and “equal,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate. For example, “treat each other equal” would be more naturally expressed as “treat each other equally,” while “communicate with other gender” needs a more idiomatic phrase such as “communicate with students of the other gender.” Spelling errors such as “institions,” “separetely,” and “responsibilies” also reduce accuracy. Build a wider set of precise expressions and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if he is brought up in an environment…” and clauses introduced by “because” and “as.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “children would have to communicate with other gender” needs an article or plural noun, and “if boy would treat his wife equal” has problems with the conditional structure and sentence form. There are also agreement and reference issues in “they would not think of depriving a person of his rights” and “the opposite gender equal to himself.” Aim for more consistent subject–pronoun agreement and practise accurate conditional patterns. Proofreading for articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries would improve control.
