Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the overweight rates of past , present and future in nine countries. The percent of overweight is given in the x-axis and the years are presented in the y-axis.

Overall, the highest overweight rate is projected in the USA. The second position in predicted overweight is England. If we observe the line graph then we can see that Australia has risen rapidly in case of overweight rates among the other countries. The lowest overweight rate is in Korea.

Regarding the line graph, USA has been able to reduce the overweight rate in between 1976 to 1980 then it again rose up. Now, in 2020, in stands at approximately 74%. England's overweight rate started at 48% and goes up to 69%. The third position for the overweight rate goes to Australia which has gone up from roughly 32% to around 63%. This is the most exponential rise in the line graph. Other countries like Canada, Spain, Austria, Italy, France has very little changes with the passing years.

Furthermore, Spain's overweight rate has gone up more than that of Canada, whereas Canada was sitting in higher position than Spain. The lowest overweight rate that is gained with the passing years is in Korea. Korea went from about 10% to roughly 36%. Korea is at the bottom of the line graph for this reason.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide an overview that identifies the USA as having the highest projected rate and Korea as the lowest, and you describe the strong rises in Australia and England. Several figures are broadly accurate, including the USA’s endpoint of about 74% and England’s rise to around 69%. However, some details are misreported: the USA’s decline occurred from about 45% in 1972 to 43% in 1980, not from 1976, and Korea began at roughly 25%, not 10%. The claim that Canada, Spain, Austria, Italy and France changed very little overlooks notable increases, especially in Spain and France. Your comparisons are relevant, but the overview and country details are unevenly developed; select the main trends more precisely and support them with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs of details. Sequencing from the broad trends to individual countries helps the reader follow the report, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Furthermore” signal relationships between points. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “If we observe the line graph then we can see” adds little, while “The third position for the overweight rate goes to Australia” is an awkward transition into data. The final paragraph repeats Korea’s lowest position after this has already been stated. Group countries by comparable trends and use clearer references to connect each comparison, rather than repeating rankings.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “projected,” “approximately,” “rapidly” and “rose.” These choices generally make the main message understandable. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a data report: “the second position in predicted overweight,” “has been able to reduce,” and “the lowest overweight rate that is gained” do not describe the figures cleanly. “Exponential rise” is also too strong for the increase shown and is not a precise description of the trend. Repeated use of “overweight rate” and “line graph” limits flexibility. Build a more accurate range of trend language, such as “declined slightly,” “increased steadily,” and “remained comparatively low,” and use “proportion” or “figure” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “whereas” and “which,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In the introduction, the axis descriptions are reversed: the percentage belongs on the vertical axis and years on the horizontal axis. There are also tense and agreement problems in “England’s overweight rate started at 48% and goes up to 69%” and “Other countries … has very little changes.” The phrase “in between 1976 to 1980” has an incorrect preposition pattern, and “in stands” appears to be a typing error that disrupts the sentence. Check subject–verb agreement, maintain consistent past or projected tense, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation.
