Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the graph’s general subject and attempts an overview, noting that the USA is highest and Korea lowest. However, it does not adequately summarise the main features: it omits most countries and nearly all comparisons, and the claim that the other countries remained relatively similar is not supported by the graph, where rates vary considerably. The USA figure is also inaccurate: the response gives about 48% in 1973, whereas the graph is approximately 45% in 1972; the later fall to about 43% in 1980 is broadly accurate. The response is only 66 words, below the required 150, so the task is substantially incomplete. Include a clear overview and key trends across the countries, supported by selected figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence is followed by an overview and then a specific detail about the USA. This gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, the response ends abruptly after the 1980 figure, with no developed comparison or concluding coverage of the graph. Connections between ideas are also unclear; for example, “Meanwhile” and “While” are used awkwardly, and the overview’s claims are not followed by supporting details. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, overview and main comparisons, then group countries with similar trends and link those comparisons clearly. This would create a more coherent progression through the information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “line graph,” “overweight rates,” “decline,” and “percentage,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, spelling errors are frequent and sometimes make the text difficult to read: “illsutrates,” “counteries,” “Itlay,” “propotion,” “fluctions,” and “reamined.” Several expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “USA proportion rates” and “lowest percentage overweight.” Use accurate forms such as “proportion of the population who were overweight” and “the lowest rate.” The range is limited, with little vocabulary for describing rises, comparisons or projections. Practise a small set of precise trend phrases and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few sentence forms, including a relative clause in “countries which is USA…” and a contrast in the overview. However, grammatical control is weak and the sentence patterns are limited. In “countries which is USA,” the verb does not agree with the plural noun, and the list is not integrated into a complete grammatical structure. “USA experienced highest…” is missing an article, while “saw a decline at 43%” uses an incorrect preposition for describing a final value. The overview also runs together with “Meanwhile” and “.While,” creating faulty punctuation and sentence boundaries. Build clear, complete sentences with accurate articles, agreement and punctuation, and use a wider range of controlled structures to compare trends.
