Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph depicts the comparison of the proportion of people who are overweight among nine selected countries from 1970 to 2020.
Overall, the US had the highest overweight population among countries in comparison throughout the time of enquiry. Furthermore, Korea, being the only Asian country there, had the least percentage of overweight population at all time.
In 1970, only USA had the reported statistics of overweight population with around 45% being over the healthy weight limit. This declined slightly in a decade by around 1-2%. Similarly, all European countries, such as England, Spain, Austria, Italy and France, had a overall growth in population who weigh more than the healthy level throughout time. Among those, England and Spain had the highest proportion, with almost 60% and 55% in 2020 respectively.
Furthermore, rest of the European nations, all grew steadily and overlapped around 45% in 2020. Australia had the first reported overweight rate at 1990, which was around 32%. However, the growth was massive in the next 10 years, with half of the population over weight limit, and that continued all the way till 2020, where it reached around 62%. Finally, Korea had less than 30% of overweight people in 2000 that increased and reached around 35% in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the graph and makes relevant comparisons between the countries. You successfully identified the US as the highest and Korea as the lowest, and noted the general upward trend. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you stated that in 1970 only the USA had reported statistics, whereas the graph shows data for other countries starting at various points. Additionally, describing the US rate as declining in the first decade is slightly inaccurate based on the visual trend. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference the years and percentages to avoid misinterpretation of the data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Similarly', and 'However' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group information by region or trend. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of countries could be smoother to avoid repetitive sentence structures. Overall, the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'statistics', 'steadily', and 'overweight population'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'at all time' (should be 'at all times') and 'rest of the European nations' (should be 'the rest of'). You attempt to use descriptive language to characterize the trends, which is positive. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'a significant upward trend' or 'a marginal decrease'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'had a overall growth' (should be 'an overall growth') and 'population over weight limit' (missing an article). Some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'had the first reported overweight rate at 1990'. Despite these errors, the meaning is clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and prepositional accuracy when describing time periods and data points.
