Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points. However, the task achievement is limited by inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student lists countries like Canada and Korea in the overview, but the prompt only mentions nine countries, and the data provided for these specific nations is inconsistent with the graph's visual representation. Furthermore, the grouping of countries is slightly confusing, as some countries are mentioned in multiple categories without clear distinction. To improve, ensure that the data selected is accurate and that the comparison between countries is clearly structured to highlight the most significant trends rather than listing every country individually.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the overview to the specific details. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition 'Nevertheless' is used to introduce a paragraph that does not strictly contrast with the previous one in a logical way. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when grouping countries. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a distinct, unified focus would enhance the flow of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with attempts to use descriptive terms like 'drastic rise', 'gradual incline', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, the phrase 'consists up-down trend' is grammatically incorrect and unnatural; 'exhibited a fluctuating trend' would be more appropriate. There is also a lack of precision in reporting data, which limits the score. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that verbs and nouns are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'Canada, France, and Spain consists up-down trend' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'over the decades of the past and future overweight rates' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate better control. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
