Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the percentage of fatty people in the past and currently, including the proportion of overweight people in OECD nations.

Overall, Canada had the highest proportion of obese individuals, while Korea had the lowest of the rest of the countries in the years between 1970 and 2020. In addition, Canada had expected to see a massive rise in the ratio of overweight as compared to the other nine nations. England also showed a substantial surge in obese individuals in 1990 and 2020, whereas the rest of the countries had demonstrated a rise and fall pattern.

In the USA, the significant surge in overweight individuals at 85% as well as the graph predicts a slight increase in the future for people who have an enormous amount of fat. In contrast, Korea had the lowest percentage of obese people, at 35%, and a slight rise was seen in the number of future overweight people in the year. 2000 and 2020. Furthermore, Canada had frequent climb of the future overweight individuals from 1990 to 2020, and almost 70% people had largest amount of fat in their bodies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the line graph. You successfully identified key trends, such as the rise in overweight rates in Canada and the USA, and made comparisons between countries. However, the report lacks precision in data reporting. For instance, referring to 'fatty people' or 'enormous amount of fat' is imprecise and inappropriate for an academic report. Additionally, some data points are unclear or misstated, such as the claim about 85% in the USA, which does not align with typical OECD data trends for this topic. To improve, focus on using neutral, academic terminology and ensuring that the data cited directly reflects the provided visual information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition,' 'whereas,' and 'In contrast' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when discussing the 'rise and fall pattern' without specifying which countries follow this trend. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear central theme and that cohesive devices are used to create a smoother, more natural progression of ideas between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is often informal or imprecise for an academic task. Phrases like 'fatty people' and 'enormous amount of fat' are not suitable for an IELTS Academic Task 1 response. You should use more formal, objective terminology such as 'overweight individuals,' 'obesity rates,' or 'proportions.' While you attempt to use some descriptive language like 'substantial surge' and 'massive rise,' the overall range is limited by the reliance on non-academic descriptors. Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary related to data trends and health statistics will significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'Canada had expected to see' is grammatically incorrect in this context, as is 'Canada had frequent climb of the future overweight individuals.' There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing trends in data reports.
