The line graph below shows past and current overweight rates, as well as a projected future overweight rate in nine selected countries.

Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line chart compares the past, present and predicted future overweight rates in nine different countries.

Overall, it is clear that overweight rates are expected to increase in all nine countries, with the USA holding the largest proportion compared to other countries.

To begin with, 45% of USA citizens were overweight in 1970. Although there was slight decreased in 1980, the rate experienced a significant increase and expected to be around 75% in 2020. Additionally, in 1990 50% people of England were overweight which gradually increased and expected to reach at 70% in 2020. In contrast, Canadians and Italians witnessed the overweight problem after 1990 at 50% and 35% respectively, however after 2000, the rate slowly increases, while being expected to be around 55% and 45% in future.

Moreover, near 2000 Koreans experienced overweight rate at 25% which gradually increase and expected to reach its highest at 35% in upcoming years. Furthermore, in 1990 natives of Australia and France overweight percentage was slight more than 30%. Although over the time French people's proportion expect around 45%, Australians will be reaching at more than 60%. Austria, overweight rate was near 40% in 1980, while Spain rate was more than 40%, both countries gradually witness increase in percentage of overweight accounted at 45% and 55% in upcoming years.
