Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided line graph exemplifies rates of obesity between 1970 and 2020 across nine different OECD countries. The graph details the proportion of each countries population that is overweight with 20% the potential lowest and 80% the potential highest.

It is evident that each country has a gradual increase in the percentage of their population that is overweight.

Most notably, the USA has the highest past overweight percentage with nearly 50% of Americans being overweight when data was first collected in the early 1970s. In contrast, Korea has the lowest past overweight percentage with around a quarter of their population being overweight in the late 1990s.

Interestingly. the USA also has the sharpest incline and also the highest projected overweight rates with almost 80% of Americans predicted as we near 2020. This equates to an approximate 35% increase.

Similarly, England has a significant projected increase in the percentage of their population deemed overweight.

From 1990 to 2020, Englands overweight proportion also rises around 35% from almost half in 1990 to almost 80% in 2020.

Overall, it can be found that Italy has the smallest projected overweight rates, predicted to increase by about 10% from close to 40% in 1995 to around 45% in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the graph well, identifying the overall trend of increasing overweight rates and highlighting specific countries like the USA, England, and Italy. The data is used to support the descriptions, and a clear overview is provided. However, the response could be improved by grouping the countries more effectively rather than listing them individually, and by ensuring the distinction between 'past' and 'projected' data is consistently clear. The inclusion of specific percentages adds value, though some comparisons could be more precise to fully meet the requirements of a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'Overall' are used to guide the reader through the information. However, there are some minor issues with punctuation, such as the full stop after 'Interestingly' instead of a comma, which slightly disrupts the flow. The referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the general trend and specific country examples could be smoother to enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with terms like 'exemplifies', 'proportion', 'incline', and 'projected' used correctly. There is a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'each countries population' (should be 'each country's population') and 'smallest projected overweight rates' (where 'lowest' would be more natural). While the range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'each countries population' is a possessive error, and 'Englands overweight proportion' is missing an apostrophe. Additionally, the sentence 'This equates to an approximate 35% increase' is grammatically sound, but the overall control of punctuation is inconsistent. The majority of sentences are clear, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band in this criterion.
