Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the proportion of overweight people in nine selected OECD countries, showing past figures as well as projections for the future.
Looking first at the countries with the highest rates, the USA stood at approximately 45% initially. After a slight decline to around 43%, the figure increased steadily and is projected to reach about 74%. England also experienced a significant rise, from roughly 47% to nearly 69%. Canada started at around 50% and fluctuated before reaching approximately 55%. Similarly, Spain increased gradually from about 43% to around 55%.
Among the remaining countries, Austria remained relatively stable at around 39% for much of the period before rising to approximately 46%. Australia showed a considerable increase, from about 33% to around 64%. Italy and France also experienced overall growth, reaching approximately 46% and 44%, respectively. Korea had the lowest figures, although its rate increased from around 25% to approximately 35%.
Overall, the proportion of overweight people is expected to increase in almost all nine countries. The USA is projected to have the highest rate in the future, while Korea is expected to remain the country with the lowest proportion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the graph and provided a clear overview. You covered all nine countries and made relevant comparisons, such as highlighting the USA as the highest and Korea as the lowest. The data points are accurate and well-integrated into your analysis. To reach a higher band, ensure that your 'overview' paragraph highlights the most significant trends more explicitly—for instance, noting that while all countries show an upward trajectory, the growth rates vary significantly between nations. Your response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs grouped by country trends, and a concise summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'Similarly', and 'Among the remaining countries' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the high-rate countries from the others. The flow is smooth, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive linking, and the structure supports the clear presentation of the information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data-description task, using terms like 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'gradually', and 'relatively stable'. The use of 'respectively' to manage data for Italy and France is a nice touch. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied verbs to describe trends, such as 'witnessed a sharp climb' or 'experienced a marginal increase'. The current vocabulary is accurate and sufficient, but adding more variety would elevate the response to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your grammar is consistently accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You handle comparative and superlative forms well, and your use of prepositional phrases to describe data points is precise. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more passive voice constructions or advanced subordinating conjunctions to describe the projections, which would demonstrate greater flexibility in your grammatical range.
