The line graph below shows past and current overweight rates, as well as a projected future overweight rate in nine selected countries.

Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph compares past, current and projected proportions of overweight people in nine selected OECD countries.

Overall, overweight rates increased in all nine countries, although the extent of growth varied considerably. The USA recorded the highest figures throughout most of the period, while Korea remained the country with the lowest proportion. England also experienced a substantial increase, whereas Austria and Italy showed more moderate growth.

In the USA, the proportion of overweight people stood at about 45% in the 1970s before falling slightly and then rising steadily to approximately 74% by 2020. England followed a similar upward pattern, increasing from just under 50% in the early 1990s to nearly 70% at the end of the period. Spain also rose gradually, reaching around 55% by 2020.

Among the remaining countries, France and Australia increased from roughly 30% to the mid-40s, while Korea climbed from about 25% to 35%. Canada and Italy also experienced noticeable growth, whereas Austria changed comparatively little, remaining around the low-to-mid 40% range.
