Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

This line graph illustrates the overweight indicator in the past and also in the present in nine selected OECD countries. The graph also shows us certain years and the proportion of it.

Overall, in all countries, rates were not moving steadily. It suffered decline with its upgrades. All were moving approximately the same.

In terms of the USA, it started in about 1974 with proportion decrease, as well as Canada. It showed the slightest downfall, but in different years.

In terms of other countries, the proportion rates were moving up. The first one whose rate started moving up was Austria, in about 1983, then Spain, which at first suffered a raise in tempter, then decline in approximately 2003. Next in line was England, which was upgrading steadily, but also suffered a downfall in between 2000 and 2010. France and Korea suffered exact same states but a difference between them was years. And last is Italy, which did not suffer any decline and was moving steadily over time.

In conclusion, overweight rates did not suffer any special declines, on the contrary, the percentage of proportions were moving marginally over time in 1970 to 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to provide a clear overview of the main trends. While it attempts to describe the data, the analysis is superficial and lacks specific data points (e.g., percentages or years) to support the claims. The description of the countries is fragmented and confusing, often misinterpreting the visual data. For instance, stating that rates were 'not moving steadily' or 'suffered decline' is vague and does not accurately reflect the overall upward trajectory shown in the graph. The response lacks a clear comparison between countries, which is essential for this task. To improve, you must identify the highest and lowest rates and highlight significant changes using the actual figures provided in the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inappropriate, such as 'Next in line was England' or 'The first one whose rate started moving up'. The referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the nine countries. The conclusion does not effectively summarise the main features but instead repeats vague observations. To improve, use a wider range of linking words to show relationships between ideas and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping countries by their trends.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate. There is a reliance on repetitive and imprecise phrasing, such as 'suffered decline', 'upgrades', and 'moving up'. The word 'tempter' appears to be a misuse of 'temperature' or a typo, and 'proportion of it' is vague. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends in a graph effectively. You should focus on learning specific collocations for describing data, such as 'a significant increase', 'a gradual decline', or 'remained stable'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise verbs and nouns will help you convey information more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'rates were not moving steadily. It suffered decline'), incorrect word forms, and awkward sentence structures. The use of complex sentences is limited and often results in errors, such as 'the percentage of proportions were moving marginally'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents a higher score. Focus on mastering simple sentence structures before attempting more complex ones, and pay close attention to pluralisation and verb tense consistency.
