Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries. It start from 1970 to 2020. There are 9 countries (USA, Canada, England, Spain, Austria, Australia, Italy, France and Korea.

Overall, all countries had overweight rates below half until the early 2000s. While the USA is projecting the highest rate of overweight, Korea is expecting the lowest overweight rate in the future.

To begin, the USA had an overweight rate below 50% around 1970, while it is projected to have the highest overweight rate, around 75%, by the year 2030. Additionally, Korea has the lowest rate, around 25%, and is expected to rise marginally compared to other countries by having an increment of 10% in its rate.

Furthermore, countries like England, Canada, and Spain had an overweight ratio of around 50% between 1990 and 2010, which is expected to reach around 55% in the future, except for England, which is projected to become the second highest in overweight rate, having around 5% less than the USA. While countries like Australia, Italy, and France had overweight ratios between 30% and 40% in the years around 1990 and 2010, these are projected to reach around 45% by the year 2030.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and making relevant comparisons. You successfully grouped the countries based on their projected trajectories, which is a key requirement for a high score. However, there are some inaccuracies in data interpretation; for instance, stating that all countries had rates below 50% until the early 2000s is a broad generalization that ignores the specific starting points of countries like the USA. Additionally, the description of the USA's past rate as 'below 50% around 1970' is vague. To improve, ensure you cite specific data points more precisely to support your comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'To begin,' and 'Furthermore' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the final paragraph where the grouping of countries could be more clearly delineated. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure allows the reader to follow the information without difficulty. Strengthening the variety of linking words would help improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'projected,' 'increment,' and 'ratio.' There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'projecting the highest rate' (should be 'projected to have') and 'having an increment of 10% in its rate' (which is slightly awkward). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It start from 1970' (subject-verb agreement) and 'the USA is projecting the highest rate' (incorrect tense/voice). Additionally, there is a missing closing parenthesis in the first paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses when discussing past data versus future projections and ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout your writing.
