Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided linear chart demonstrates the proportion of current and predicted future overweight of selected countries namely USA, England, Canada, Spain, Austria, Australia, Italy, France, Korea. The data has been calibrated into percentages.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is clearly seen that overweight rates are expected to increase in all countries over the period. The USA records the highest proportions throughout the graph and projected to remain the most overweight nation by the end of the graph. By contrast, Korea has the lowest overweight rate, despite a steady increase. Among the remaining countries, Canada is forecast to experience one of the most noticeable rises.
At first glance, it is evident that in the USA, the proportion of overweight people stood at approximately 45%. After a slight decline to around 43% by the end of that decade, the figure rose steadily, reaching about 60% in 2000 and is predicted to climb further to roughly 75% by 2020. Canada followed a similar upward trend, increasing from around 45% in the early 1990s to nearly 58% in the 2000 before being projected to approach 70% by the end of the period.
Moving ahead, the remaining countries also experienced upward trend. England and Spain are expected to rise to 65% and 55% respectively by 2020. Austria and Italy remained at intermediate levels, ending the period at 46% and 45%, while Australia is projected to reach 45% from 30 percent in the initial year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all nine countries and highlighted the key features, such as the USA's leading position and Korea's lowest rate. However, the report could be improved by grouping the countries more effectively in the final paragraph to avoid a list-like structure. While you mentioned the USA and Canada in detail, the remaining countries were grouped together somewhat abruptly. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are supported by precise data points from the graph, as some of your figures (e.g., the 2020 projections) are presented as general trends rather than specific data comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'By contrast,' 'At first glance,' and 'Moving ahead' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. To improve, ensure that the transition between the detailed analysis of the USA/Canada and the remaining countries is smoother. Currently, the final paragraph feels a bit rushed compared to the detailed breakdown of the first two countries. Using more varied referencing would also enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'calibrated into percentages,' 'intermediate levels,' and 'upward trend' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'linear chart' (a line graph is more standard) and 'the end of the graph' (which refers to the visual representation rather than the time period). You have a good grasp of academic tone, but incorporating more precise collocations related to data trends—such as 'a marginal decline' or 'a significant surge'—would elevate your writing to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, though there are occasional slips, such as 'projected to remain' (missing the auxiliary 'is') and 'in the 2000' (should be 'in 2000'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentences could benefit from more varied clause structures to demonstrate greater flexibility. The grammar does not impede communication, and you show a good command of tense usage when discussing past data and future projections.
