Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the USA's high rates and Korea's low rates. However, the analysis is inconsistent and contains factual inaccuracies regarding the data trends. For instance, stating that the USA rate 'declined' in the 1980s or mentioning a 'sudden increase' of 5% in the 2000s lacks precision and does not accurately reflect the visual information provided. The summary is somewhat disjointed, and the reporting of figures is often confusing, which hinders the reader's ability to grasp the overall trends effectively. To improve, focus on identifying clear periods of growth or decline and describing the overall trajectory of the countries rather than listing isolated, sometimes inaccurate, data points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is not always logical. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'In [year]'. There is a lack of effective linking between sentences, making the text feel like a list of observations rather than a cohesive report. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when comparing countries. To improve, use a wider variety of transition words (e.g., 'meanwhile', 'subsequently', 'in contrast') to connect ideas and ensure that the relationship between the data points is clearly articulated for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'amount of growth' and 'proportion of overweight' are used frequently. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'overweight rates was' (should be 'were') and 'least amount of overweight rates' (should be 'lowest overweight rates'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey basic information, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' (e.g., 'climb', 'surge', 'rise') and 'decrease' (e.g., 'drop', 'fall', 'decline') to make the writing more engaging and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The line graph show', 'the Austria had'), article usage (e.g., 'the Austria', 'the Korea'), and tense consistency. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty, such as 'The overweight rates was 50% which were similar for Canada and Spain'. The punctuation is generally functional, but the overall control of grammar is weak. Focusing on basic sentence construction and ensuring that subjects and verbs agree will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
