Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, such as identifying the highest and lowest countries (USA and Korea). However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The description of the trends lacks precision; for instance, stating the USA reached 'a third quarter' is mathematically unclear and inaccurate based on the graph. The summary of the other countries is grouped too broadly, failing to highlight specific data points or significant changes over the time period. To improve, you should focus on selecting key data points to support your comparisons rather than making vague generalizations about 'maintenance'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes awkward, such as 'Overall it is noticeable that' and 'In contrast'. The second paragraph is particularly problematic as it describes the graph's layout (axes and labels) rather than the data itself, which is unnecessary. The progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, and the transition between the general overview and the specific country details could be smoother to improve the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'OCED patients' (the graph shows overweight rates, not patients) and 'decent form of maintenance'. The phrase 'third quarter' is also used incorrectly to describe a percentage. To achieve a higher score, you should use more specific terminology related to data interpretation, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuation', or 'upward trend', and ensure that your word choices accurately reflect the information presented in the visual aid.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'Every nation is marked different in stats' (should be 'differently') and 'England is the second most country' (should be 'second highest'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of sentence construction and adjective/adverb usage.
