Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the graph but fails to provide a clear or accurate overview. The data reported is often confusing or factually incorrect based on the provided graph (e.g., stating the USA was at 45% in 1970, which is not supported by the visual data). The summary lacks a coherent selection of key features, focusing instead on isolated, inaccurate data points. To improve, you must ensure that the information selected is accurate and that the overview highlights significant trends, such as the general upward trajectory across all nations, rather than listing random figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inappropriate, such as the repetitive use of 'the projects' which does not fit the context of a line graph. Referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between countries. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'meanwhile', 'in contrast', 'subsequently') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping countries by their growth patterns.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There is a lack of precision in describing trends; for instance, 'huge increase' is a basic descriptor, and the term 'projects' is used incorrectly to refer to the data points or the countries themselves. There are also frequent errors in word choice and spelling (e.g., 'illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'italy' and 'canada' not being capitalised). To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to data analysis, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'gradual', or 'significant growth'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the line graph illustrate'), missing articles, and incorrect sentence structure. Punctuation is inconsistent, with many sentences lacking proper capitalisation or ending in fragments. The range of structures is very limited, relying mostly on simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct verb tenses for describing past and future data, and ensure consistent use of articles and capitalisation for proper nouns.
