Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the overall trend and highlighting key countries like the USA and South Korea. However, the task achievement is limited by inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the prompt mentions 'past and current' rates and 'projected future' rates, but the student incorrectly refers to a '50 years time period' and describes the data as 'overall growth of obesity' rather than 'overweight rates'. Additionally, the grouping of countries is somewhat arbitrary, and the description of the data lacks precision in comparing the specific time points provided in the graph. To improve, ensure data points are accurately transcribed and the timeframes are correctly identified.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Furthermore', and 'Subsequently' are used to link ideas. However, the progression of information is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'Spain and Canada depicted similar data where every 55 individuals per 100 people are in a unhealthy weight category'. The use of 'peaked the graph' is also slightly awkward in terms of flow. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'obesity' instead of 'overweight rates' and 'upsurge' used in a slightly unnatural context. Phrases like 'peaked the graph' and 'encountered a less obesity rate' are non-standard. While the student attempts to use a range of vocabulary, the lack of precision and occasional awkward collocations limit the score. Focusing on topic-specific terminology and more natural collocations would significantly improve the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'the obesity rate have been significantly increased' (subject-verb agreement), 'rather than that of eastern society' (awkward comparison), and 'a unhealthy weight category' (article error). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall clarity. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that complex sentence structures are used accurately.
