Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlight the USA as the highest and Korea as the lowest, while grouping the other nations. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, stating the USA started at 45% in 1970 is not supported by the visual data, and mentioning England twice in the third paragraph is a minor oversight. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are extracted more precisely and that the overview clearly synthesizes the overall trends rather than just listing countries.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the mention of 'England' twice in the same sentence, which disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring precise referencing would enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prominent rise', 'moderate incline', and 'drastic fluctuations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'figures of people being obese and unhealthy' (which is slightly redundant) and 'climbing a figure of around 63%'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations related to data trends will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, including missing articles (e.g., 'USA had the most'), punctuation issues, and awkward phrasing like 'without the exception of England'. Some sentences are slightly disjointed due to these errors. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent use of articles, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately without losing clarity. The errors present do not significantly impede communication but are frequent enough to limit the score.
