Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The following line graph illustrates the ratio of overweight in the past times as well as it shows the predicted overweight rate in nine countries.

In the year 1970, there was almost 45percent of the population having overweight in USA and somehow this ratio has gradually increase throughout these years and it can be seen that till 2020 there will be 75 percent of the population with overweight.

Most of the counties are facing the same ratio of overweight and there is increase in overweight in every country.

The only country which has shown some control towards the overweight issue is Korea. Somehow it has the least number of overweight ratio which is 25 percent in the year 1990s and it is predicted that it will rise up to 35 percent in year 2020

But the point to be noted is that almost every country is predicted to have increase in the number of people with overweight in the year 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear overview or highlight key trends effectively. While it mentions the USA and Korea, it lacks a comprehensive summary of the data across all nine countries. The description of the USA trend is inaccurate based on typical OECD data patterns, and the analysis is overly simplistic. To improve, you must identify the most significant trends (e.g., the general upward trajectory) and provide specific data points to support your comparisons rather than making vague statements like 'most of the counties are facing the same ratio'. The response lacks a clear, analytical focus required for Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into short paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'somehow' and 'in the year'. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the general overview and specific country examples is abrupt. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', 'Consequently') to connect your ideas more fluidly. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data analysis.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'ratio of overweight' and 'number of overweight' are used repeatedly, which lacks precision. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'past times' instead of 'the past' and 'control towards the overweight issue'. To achieve a higher band, you should use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'upward trend', or 'fluctuation'. Avoid informal or imprecise phrasing to ensure your writing sounds more academic and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'there was almost 45percent of the population having overweight' (incorrect structure) and 'it will rise up to 35 percent in year 2020' (missing article). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and the use of prepositions. Practice combining simple sentences into complex ones using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
