Student answer (Band 5.0)

This line graph shows the past overweight and the current overweight as well it predicts the future overweight rate of nine countries which are mentioned in the line graph such as England, Canada, Spain, Korea, France, Austria, Italy, Australia. It can be seen that in 1970 in USA the proportion of overweight people was less than 50 percent but it can be increased up to 75 percent in 202. In Austria in 1980 proportion of overweight was less than 40 percent but in 1990 t0 2000 it increased more and in future it is predicted that it will be more than 45 percent. In Korea the overweight people were not in past but gradually they have increased in 2000 and are still increasing. in Italy and France there was no overweight proportion seen but in early 2000 there were people who were overweight and rapid growth is seen. in other countries like Canada, England and some more also had a rapid growth in the overweight rates. there should be some steps which should be taken by government to have a balance graph related to these nine countries

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response identifies the main features of the graph but lacks a clear overview. While it mentions several countries, the data provided is often inaccurate or vague (e.g., stating there was 'no overweight proportion' in Italy/France, which is not supported by the graph). The report fails to group the countries effectively or highlight the most significant trends, such as the overall upward trajectory across all nations. Furthermore, the inclusion of a personal recommendation for government intervention is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1, which requires an objective summary of data rather than an opinion or solution.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is written as a single paragraph, which hinders readability and logical progression. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas; sentences are often joined by simple conjunctions or start abruptly. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between countries is mechanical. To improve, you should use clear paragraphing—one for the introduction/overview and one or two for the body—and employ a wider range of linking words such as 'in contrast,' 'meanwhile,' or 'consequently' to guide the reader through the data comparisons.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is repetitive and limited. Phrases like 'overweight rate' and 'increased' are used repeatedly without variation. There is a lack of precise terminology to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'peaked,' 'remained stable,' or 'a significant rise.' Additionally, there are errors in word choice, such as 'balance graph,' which does not accurately describe the data. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to data analysis and avoid repeating the same descriptors for every country mentioned.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles (e.g., 'in 1970 in USA'), incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'it can be increased'), and punctuation issues. Sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. There are also errors in capitalization and basic syntax, such as 'in other countries like Canada, England and some more also had a rapid growth.' These errors occasionally make the meaning difficult to follow. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage for past and future data is essential for improvement.
