Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the graph, but it fails to provide an accurate overview. The description of the data is significantly flawed, as the student misinterprets the trends (e.g., claiming the USA rate decreased when the graph shows an upward projection). Furthermore, the response is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence, which leaves the task unfinished. Key comparisons between the nine countries are missing, and the data points cited are often inaccurate or confusingly presented. To improve, focus on identifying the overall trends (increases vs. decreases) and ensure that the data reported matches the visual evidence provided in the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a logical structure. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the progression of ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'in 1970 to 2020' and 'over the period'. The lack of clear transitions between the overview and the body paragraphs makes the text difficult to follow. Additionally, the abrupt ending prevents the development of a coherent conclusion or a complete analysis of the data. Improving the use of linking words like 'whereas', 'subsequently', or 'in contrast' would help create a better flow between sentences and ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is quite limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'highest', 'smallest', and 'increased', often using them incorrectly in context (e.g., 'USA was the highest country'). There are also issues with word choice, such as 'smallest country in the overweight rates', which is imprecise. Spelling errors, such as 'Australlia', further detract from the quality of the writing. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use more precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'a significant proportion'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'others countries was'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'USA started at proportion overweight was approximately 48'). The use of complex structures is attempted but often results in ungrammatical phrases. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and incomplete sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring subjects and verbs agree, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect verb tenses.
