Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

By the given figure we could conclude that the past and future overweight rates in the selected OECD countries are aggressively increasing throughout the years we countries like the USA that had reached 70% on their proportion overweight in 2020 and there's a lot of others countries that follow in their footsteps like England and Australia.

The graph also show the other countries that have a slow development in the past and projected future overweight rates like Korea and France, Italy and lastly Austria all these countries their proportion overweight don't go over 50%.

But there a some medium proportion overweight countries like spain and Canada that had been increasing their proportion overweight throughout the years .

In the end the past and future overweight rates in selected OECD countries proportion scale is different from a country to an other throughout the years so the highest countries should maintain their level and low countries should work on improving to be on the top of the scale

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the main features of the graph, but it lacks the precision required for an Academic Task 1. While you identify some countries, the description is vague and lacks specific data points to support your claims. For example, you mention the USA reached 70% in 2020, but you fail to provide comparative data for other countries or mention the projected trends clearly. The final paragraph includes personal advice ('should maintain their level'), which is inappropriate for an objective data report. To improve, focus on selecting key data points (start, end, and significant trends) and avoid subjective commentary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow is weak. The transition between groups of countries is abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes repetitive (e.g., 'throughout the years' is used multiple times). The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'there a some medium proportion overweight countries', which lacks a smooth connection to the previous sentence. Improving the use of linking words like 'conversely', 'in contrast', or 'meanwhile' would help guide the reader through the comparisons more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'proportion overweight' are used repeatedly, which makes the writing feel mechanical. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'aggressively increasing' (which is not the most natural collocation for data trends) and 'slow development' when referring to rates. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise terminology such as 'upward trend', 'significant growth', or 'remained relatively stable', and avoid repeating the same phrases throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include 'there a some' (should be 'there are'), 'from a country to an other' (should be 'from one country to another'), and run-on sentences like the first paragraph, which lacks proper punctuation. The sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting complexity. You need to focus on basic subject-verb agreement, correct use of articles, and ensuring that sentences are clearly demarcated with appropriate punctuation to improve clarity.
